FLUKE FISHING SAILING DAILY AT 8AM
May 14th
Capt. Mike reported that the fluke fishing was a little slower
today but still rates good for so early in the season. The water
was a little dirty from the past two days of easterly gales although
the water was clearing up in the afternoon which also coincided
with the best fluking of the day. Anglers had a mixture of shorts
and keepers with a number of fish in the 4lb range. A nice seabass
and the first two cocktail bluefish of the season plus a bunch
of big sea robins made up the remainder of the day's catch. Several
anglers had several nice keepers apiece today. The weather sounds
great tommorrow and we look forward to another good day along
Rhode Island's south shore beaches.
Capt. Rich reported an okay day on the local cod grounds. The
weather was great which allowed customers to drift most of the
day. Anglers had a slow pick of nice size cod throughout the day
with most of the fish in the 8-10lb range. A couple anglers had
several nice fish apiece. Several good cod were dropped today
as the bite was on the softer side and experienced anglers fared
better. Anglers also had a handful of nice red hake, one monster
12lb blackfish, a few big pout and all the jumbo ocean perch anyone
could ever want. The fishing was much much better than expected
after two days of gale force easterly wind. We look forward to
codfishing again on Friday at 7am aboard the Gail Frances.
May 13th
Tommorrow's (Wednesday's) weather sounds about as good as it
gets for mid May. Brilliant Sunshine and light winds and balmy
temperatures.. The Lady Frances will be fluking at 8am and The
Gail Frances codfishing at 7am. Plenty of room on Thursday Night's
Squid trip and the weather sounds excellent.
May 12th
Capt. Ray reported that tonight's squid fishing was about the
same as last night's but was a little better overall. A slow steady
pick of large and jumbo squid with a few flurries of faster action..
The squid were all around the boat and frequently up on the surface
but they took some finessing. There is plenty of squid around
however and once the weather really straightens out the fishing
should explode. Except for one guy on the boat who just couldn't
catch for some reason (your's truly) everyone else managed 20
to 60 squid apiece. Fortunately the wind did not start really
picking up until the end of the trip. Next squid trip is Thursday
Night at 7pm. Call the office for reservations.
May 11th
Capt. Mike excitedly reported that the 2008 Fluke opener met
with very good results for so early in the season. Anglers had
a slow pick of shorts and keepers on every drift of the day. The
drift was quick today and the fish were spread all around the
boat. Little or no movement was the preferred range of motion
today as the water is still cold and the fluke yet to become real
aggressive.Spro jigs and Spinners worked pretty well today and
whole fresh squid met with some success as well. Longtime Tuna
fisherman George Shepard had 3 nice fish to take home today while
longtime regular customer Doc nailed a couple hefty fluke. Peter
Tu brought a 4.5lb mini slab to the net that fell victim to a
fresh whole squid. Lori Frey and Wallie both took 4lb fluke home
for dinner and another longtime customer Art Blumer took home
several nice fluke. Some anglers caught as many as a dozen shorts
apiece and we had an assortment of big sea robins to add to the
day's action. A lot of fish were missed and dropped today due
to the soft bite but we caught fish over a very large area. Capt.
Mike reported marking a fair amount of bait and this angler feels
this is the best fishing he has ever seen before mid May. There
will be no fluking Monday and Tuesday due to some awful weather
that is upon our doorstep but the Fluke boat will be sailing Wednesday
morning at 8am aboard the Lady Frances.
May 11th
Capt. Ray reported a fair pick of mostly good size squid last
night. The fishing was still somewhat short of expectations but
some more experienced squid fishermen ended up doing quite well.
Hi hooks had at least 50 good size squid. We try again this evening
at 7pm and look forward to even better fishing.
Capt. Don reported a great group of anglers aboard his RISAA
charter this evening but unfortunately the squid bite was a little
on the slow side.
Today the Lady Frances will be out fluking, our first open boat
trip of the 2008 season. Look for an update on today's action
a bit later this afternoon.
May 9th
Due to strong winds, Saturday's local cod and fluke fishing are
cancelled. Fluke fishing will begin on Sunday at 8am. Reports
from commercial and recreational fishermen have both indicated
that the fluke are here in numbers on the south shore beaches.
We are looking forward to our first trip of the season on Sunday!
May 7th
Unfortunately the weather looks horrendous for tommorrow, enough
so that the highly anticipated first day of fluking is going to
be cancelled. No cod or squid trip for the day either. Right now
Saturday for day trips does not look too good either but we will
look at the forecast tommorrow and make a decision accordingly.
Right now the night squid trips look like a go for Saturday Night.
May 6th 6pm
Capt. Mike reported today's local cod trip was off slightly from
the last couple trips. Local charter boats had reported that the
bite was off a bit yesterday and today as well. We picked up a
few cod at every stop and by the day's end we had a fair number
of fish but just not the pace we had gotten used to over the last
couple trips. More in the way of short cod today too. Everything
was on bait today. Nice market size cod with the largest as usual
in the lower teens. We did see a noticeable increase in the number
of hake today and even more ocean pout, most of which were quite
large. One decent pollock and a bunch of short pollock again today
plus a couple snowshoe flounder, a 7lb tatoug, a few handfuls
of perch and one good size seabass. Next cod trip is scheduled
at 7am Friday aboard the Lady Frances.
May 6th, 7am
Capt. Paul just came in and said the local squid fishing exploded
last night. He reported that a slow pick turned into a non stop
red hot bail job just before 10pm. He and his fellow anglers filled
several large pails in no time. The Frances Fleet is sqid fishing
by reservation Thurs Fri Sat and Sun nights at 7pm. Call the office
to book a spot and get squidding!
May 5th
Capt. Mike reported another good day on the local cod grounds.
Mother Nature provided us with some of the finest spring weather
that Southern New England has to offer. A complete bluebird day!
Fishing started off very slow but by mid morning the cod started
to bite and we wound up having a nice pick during the afternoon.
A nice variety of bottom dwellers in addtion to the cod, including
a half dozen large and jumbo seabass, another large blackfish,
a good size winter flounder and quite a few supersize ocean pout
and the usual assortment of perch. A shot of short pollock on
one drop as well. Hi hook honors today went to John Wills from
New York who put 7 nice cod up to 10lbs in his cooler and the
pool in his wallet thanks to his 10lb cod. Jared from Ct went
home with 5 nice cod and two jumbo seabass. The majority of anglers
left with enough codfish for a good dinner or two. One angler
jigged up a couple cod today but bait was the way to go.Wednesday
looks like another fine spring day to do some local codfishing.
The Lady Frances will be sailing at 7am.
May 4th
Capt. Ray reported last night's sqid trip was plagued with dirty
water and string easterly winds which in turn caused the squid
fishing to be slower than anticipated. Nevertheless anglers did
get some squid including some real jumbos. Codfishing was cancelled
today due to an extremely erroneous and forboding weather forecast
improperly forecasted by yesterday's meteorologists. This fisherman
was out fluking for a while this afternoon and it was beautiful.
Just a couple fluke but we could not keep the jumbo squid off
our hookbaits! Go figure! We highly anticiape local codfishing
tommorrow at 7am and hopefully we can repeat the great fishing
of Saturday.
May 3rd
Capt. Mike reported a small turnout for this mornings codfish
trip however those anglers that went experienced some excellent
codfishing in very local waters. The first hour was excellent
with one fellow using a jig and teaser combo putting 4 good fish
in the boat in the first ten minutes, and then followed up with
a fine double header a half hour later! Both bait and jigs were
working but the small diamond jigs in the 6-8z size with a teaser
above were tough to beat today. Around late morning the bite began
to slow down most likely due to the increasing east to southeast
wind and steadily building seas. Capt. Mike even came down and
jigged up a half dozen nice cod in short order early in the day.
Everyone on board had codfish to take home today. All nice market
size fish in the 5-9lb range with a few larger ones to 12lbs and
nearly all the cod were keepers today with very few shorts. It
was nearly all cod today with one large blackfish around 8lbs
and one giant ocean pout plus a handful of perch, and last but
not least the first two decent size seabass of the season were
caught today. Even though Fluking will begin on Friday, it sure
is great to be finding codfish in all the places they used to
be in the good old days. All Capt. and crew are very excited about
both fisheries and it is shaping up to be a great season already!
Sunday's cod trip, unfortunately, is cancelled due to the tough
weather conditions including strong southeast wind and rain. Monday's
weather forecast looks very good and we look forward to codfishing
aboard the Lady Frances at 7am.
May 2nd
One of the local Pt. Judith made his first trip of the year
and reported having a very good day on the very local cod grounds.
His small group caught over 40 cod with about half of them keepers
and in addition they had a good bunch of big ocean pout and some
nice size perch. We are looking forward to codfishing tommorrow
morning on the Lady Frances at 7am.
May 1st
While walking around the docks today, I observed a recreational
angler who was out in his own small boat bring back to the dock
7 beautiful fluke, all in the 20 to 22 inch range. The fellow
also said that he relased between 30 and 40 smaller fish and he
was only out for a couple hours! The weather looks pretty good
for tommorrow and we look forward to codfishing locally aboard
the Lady Frances at 7am. Capt Paul reported that squid fishing
was red hot last night locally and we are hoping to make our maiden
voyage for squid on the Frances Fleet tommorrow night at 7pm.
April 29th
Had enought rain? Well. the weather looks good for local codfishing
tommorrow and we will be sailing at 7am aboard the Lady Frances
at 7am.
April 28th
The fluke are definitely on the beach!!. The crew has been able
to make a few trips for fluke and the fishing has been quite good
considering the water temperature and how early in the season
it is. The fluke are here because the squid have arrived and also
there have been some sandeels in close to shore as well. Some
good size squid were taken on hook baits meant for the fluke!
Word is that the squid are in good off of Newport. We are looking
forward to the first squid trip on Friday night at 7pm.
April 27th
Due to the forecasted inclement weather for tommorrow we are
canceling Monday's local cod fishing trip. Next cod trip sets
sail Wednesday at 7am aboard the Lady Frances.
Capt. Rich called in to say that the anglers aboard today enjoyed
a pleasant dayon the water with light wind and relatively calm
seas. We were able to drift a good part of the day, Anglers did
pick away at a few nice cod here and there but the cod action
was not quite what was hoped for. However some anglers enjoyed
some fast action with good size mackerel which have invaded the
local cod grounds. Those who focused on the mackerel did quite
well with a couple guys filling up half a 100qt cooler. A number
of the cod taken were good sized today in the 10lb range with
longtime regular customer Mark from Hartford taking the pool with
a fine 15lbr. Anglers who stuck with jigging today did manage
a few nice cod today and the fish are still spitting up sandeels
so the bait is still around. Roland from CT went home with a brace
of big blackfish scaling in at 9 and 7lbs each. A few hake and
ocean pout rounded out the catch today. Next cod trip looks to
be Wednesday at 7am aboard the Lady Frances.
April 26th
Capt. Rich reported that the Lady Frances had a slow pick of
market cod today. Jimmy from Sheepshead Bay took the pool with
a fine cod today. Anglers also had some big pout and a bunch of
perch. The Lady Frances will be sailing tommorrow morning at 7am
for cod. The weather looks quite good for fishing tommorrow.
Capt. Don reported Paul Gray's troop 27 Boy Scout fishing trip
aboard the Gail Frances was a scuccess today. Capt. Don reported
an improvement in the local codfishing as well today. The scouts
picked away at nice market cod all throughout the trip with a
nice pop on the last drop of the day. The largest was around 10lbs.
The fellas aboard also caught a nice bunch of supersize ocean
pout, a few hake, another big snowshoe flounder and some nice
perch. Capt. Don also reported seeing quite a few whales today
as well.
The Ryan Clairmont charter just returned from their private charter
aboard the Admiral Frances and had an enjoyable day on the water
catching some nice cod to 12lbs, some good size red hake and a
few big pout. One nice snowshoe flounder in the mix as well. Capt.
Mike reported the fishing seemed to be a sightly improved over
yesterday's action. Whales were also around to provide entertainment
for the anglers aboard.
April 25th
Capt. Mike reported today's local cod action fell somewhat short
of expectations after Wednesday's excellent fishing. Perhaps the
weather was too nice?? Just like on Monday we did not see the
bait or the whale activity that we had Wednesday and Sunday when
the bite was hot. Nevertheless anglers did pick away at a few
cod throughout the day both drifting and on the anchor. Mr. Maruda
from New Jersey took the pool with a nice cod in the lower teens.
The cod taken were all nice green market fish just not in the
numbers we had hoped for. We did have three large blackfish today
with the largest around 7lbs and an increase in the number of
hake over the past couple trips plus a smattering of jumbo ocean
pout and a few handfuls of good size ocean perch. Tommorrow is
another day however and we will have a couple boats out on the
cod grounds tommorrow.
April 24th
The weather looks great for Saturday. We
are taking reservations and if needed we will be taking two boats
out for local codfishing which has been quite good recently. All
cod trips sail 7am and return at 4pm.
The weather also looks great for tommorrow's cod trip so look
for an updated report later tommorrow afternoon.
April 23rd
Capt. Mike called in to say that today
the local codfishing was once again excellent with a moderate
group of anglers putting just over 120 nice cod in the boat today, covering
some different ground farther south of where Sunday and Monday's
fishing had taken place. In the morning we drifted and picked
away every drift and in the afternoon we anchored up and picked
some more. Brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures made the day
even more enjoyable. The bait was back in force today with whales
breeching all over the cod grounds. These fast moving hunting
cod were gorging on sandeels, herring, and mackerel. Both bait
and jigs were working today. One angler jigged up over a half
dozen nice fish and Capt. Mike came down and swung a jig for a
few minutes and was promptly rewarded with a fat market cod which
swallowed his jig before it hit the bottom! A number of other
fish were jigged up as well today but the bulk of the action was
on teasers with bait. The jigs that were working today were the
smaller diamond jigs NOT the big norwegian jigs. The cod were
all nice fat green fish, mostly in the 5 to 10lb range with a
few larger ones up to 15lbs. We had quite a few more 8-10lb fish
than pervious trips so sizes are on the increase. In addition
anglers had several big snowshoe flounder and a good bunch of
jumbo ocean pout. Angler highlights include but were not limited
to the following: Jim Larson and Mr. Wastasta from southern Ct
combined for 9 good cod to 10lbs while the Fitzgenry father and
son team nailed 15 nice fish to 10lbs. Elton from Fall River,MA
was hi hook for the day with 9 nice fish and had the largest of
the day at a solid 15lbs. Mr Baker from Narragansett had 7 nice
fish while longtime regular Blu also had 7 nice cod and a 4lb
slob ling to take home back to New York. Blu's friend had two
jumbo snowshoe flounder to go along with his catch of cod and
another guy on the boat nailed 6 good fish, getting 3 in the last
fifteen minutes of the day! Several double headers today and some
short cod as well. The first fluke of the year was caught today
as well. Next cod trip sets sail Friday morning at 7am aboard
the Lady Frances.
April 21st
Capt. Mike reported that the local codfishing today fell somewhat
short of expectations after yesterday's big hit. No two days are
ever the same in fishing though. We did not see the volume of
bait of the past few days and consequently there were less cod
to be taken. Nevertheless Capt. Mike tried relentlessly and was
able to find a pick of nice market size codfish in the afternoon
for his customers. The majority of anglers did leave with a cod
or two for dinner. We also had a couple big snowshoe flounder
and also a couple nice blackfish. Daryl from Hartford had a fine
7lb blackfish and a 19 inch 3.5lb snowshoe. Steve from Newport
took the largest cod of the day with a nice green fish around
12lbs. A fair number of short cod today and a few good size pout.
We feel this slowdown is temporary and look forward to our next
outing Wednesday aboard the Lady Frances at 7am.
April 20th
Capt. Rich aboard the Lady Frances has just pulled into the slip
and has filed an outstanding day codfish report. A small group
of anglers put well over 70 nice cod in the boat. All nice market
size fish in the 5 to 8lb range with the largest again in the
lower teens. Richard and his family from Cranston had 9 nice cod
to take home with Richard catching 6 himself. Longtime regular
customer Dan Melino from Providence had 3 nice fish to take home
while two guys from CT combined for over a dozen nice fish to
take home. Hi hook for the day went home with 10 fine codfish,
while another fellow tallied 9 good cod for the day. It was mostly
all cod for today with some short cod caught and promplty released
as well. Even a handful of doubleheaders! Just a handful of perch
and and a few big ocean pout in the mix as well. All the cod caught
today were taken on fresh clams. As has been the case the local
waters were teeming with bait and whales.
April 19th
Early word has just come in from the offshore cod trip which
sailed last night. Due to weather and fishing conditions we went
back up to Steelwagen and the move proved to be a good one. Capt.
Mike put his anglers aboard into some solid codfishing. All cod
with the largest being around 30lbs taken by Nicky Blount who
nailed 10 nice fish for the trip. The catch was more than tripled
from last weekends with numbers varying per angler but more experienced
anglers scoring good catches.Quite a few cod in the 10lb range.
Action was almost all on jigs and teasers. Loads of throwbacks
ensuring action all day long on the fishing grounds. Capt. Mike
and crew were elated by this greatly improved offshore trip and
are looking foreward to next Weekend's 2 Day trip. Still good
availability on that trip so call the office to book a reservation
if you would like to go.
, The squid and fluke are already starting to show up on the
beach and trips for both are just around the corner with squid
starting May 1st and Fluking may be starting earlier than planned
by the way things are shaping up.
April 19th
Capt. Rich reported the local codfishing was much improved today
over the last couple trips. The bite started very poor in the
morning with no drift but by midday we started to see some life
and the last hour of the trip featured several decent drifts with
anglers picking away at some nice green fat cod with sizes a little
better today. More cod in the 7-8lb range with the largest a solid
12lbs taken by Vinnie from Oklahoma who nailed 3 nice cod today. One
angler even had a double header catch of keeper cod on one drift.
Doug from CT had a brace of nice cod today while longtime regular
customer Bill from Foster,RI had a fine 9lb tatoug and a good
cod and James Koplar from Collinsville.Ct also nailed a fine 7lb
blackfish to go along with his good size codfish. Some shorts
today as well. We also had one nice flounder and a couple good
size hake plus some good size perch and a couple big pout to round
out the day's action. All this codfish activity has been in relatively
shallow water not all that far from Pt. Judith. All the codfish
today were healthy fat green fish and were all chock full of herring.
The bait that we did not see yesterday was back today with balls
of bait being marked all over the grounds, some of the stacks
being thirty and forty feet thick! Today as an added bonus for
anglers aboard were some excellent Finback Whale sightings rather
close to the boat in the morning. Whales were also seen in the
distance throughout the day and again on the ride home from the
fishing grounds. For bird enthusiasts petrels and gannets have
become almost commonplace on recent trips. Next codfish trip will
set sail on the Lady Frances tommorrow morning at 7am.
April 17th
Capt. Mike reported the local codfishing was still a bit on the
slowside although there were a few more keepers today and more
shorts. Ray from New York took the pool with a fat green codfish
that had so many cut clams in it's stomach the fish looked like
it was gonna explode! Keep in mind codfish can be very efficient
bait stealers especially when the bite is soft. Unfortunately
the hake did not really cooperate today. To be sure anglers did
pick away at a few large and jumbo ling and some supersize ocean
perch. Just a couple pout today. One enormous snowshoe flounder
spit the hook right at the surface and one angler also caught
a nice blackfish. We also did not see quite as much bait as pervious
trips and likely the groundswell from the offshore storm was to
blame. The cod that were taken today were all caught on bait on
low hooks indicating that the cod were hard down on the bottom
today and not charging all over the ocean chasing bait. Tommorrow
is another day and everything should be back to normal. The Lady
Frances will be the local cod boat tommorrow sailing at 7am.
April 16th
Capt. Mike reported today's local fishing for cod was a bit slower
than the past few days. However, anglers managed good numbers of
hake, including some real jumbos. Anglers had from a few to as
many as 15 nice hake apiece. Some big ocean perch and truly supersize
ocean pout mixed in as well. Nicky Blount had the largest codfish
of the day with a fine fat codfish just over 10lbs. Nicky and
another fellow jigging in the bow shared hi hook honors on the
codfish for the day.John Wilks from New York State won the pool
with a nice green codfish. That same fellow jigging in the bow
also snagged both mackerel and herring indicating just how thick
the bait is on the local cod grounds This is the most bait this
angler has seen on the local cod grounds in nearly a decade! We
feel that the codfish are swimming all over the place chasing
bait. Whales could be seen throughout the day and the codfish
were also spitting up sandeels. The weather was as beautiful as
could be all day with bright sunshine and almost no wind and balmy
temperatures. We look forward to Friday's outing aboard the Lady
Frances sailing at 7am. Still plenty of room on the offshore trips
scheduled for this weekend so it is still not too late to call
the office and book a spot.
April 14th
We have two offshore trips on schedule for this weekend. Friday
Night's trip is open bottom offshore fishing while Saturday Night's
trip heads out to the Nantucket Wrecks which we have yet to fish
this year. Still plenty of room on both trips. The office is open
to take reservations seven days a week from 9am to 5pm and some
nights even later.
April 14th
Capt. Mike reported that it was another beautiful day with picture
perfect weather and some hungry codfish. A small group of anglers
enjoyed a slow but steady pick of market size cod throughout the
day Again all green fish chasing bait but still no results with
the jigs, fresh clams were the ticket.. A few jumbo pout and one
big white chin blackfish which was released unharmed to fight
another day otherwise it was all cod. Some anglers had three or
four keeper cod apiece like Mickey Moh from Audubon Mass who had
4 nice cod and the pool fish just shy of ten pounds, and most left
with enough cod for dinner. Some throwbacks but more in the way
of keepers today. Still seeing plenty of bait both sandeels and
herring on the grounds but no whales today. Next codfish trip
will set sail Wednesday morning at 7am aboard the Lady Frances.
April 13th
Starting tommorrow we will be adding Mondays to the sailing schedule.
The Lady Frances will be codfishing at 7am tommorrow morning.
The weather looks great for fishing and the temperatures comfortable.
Capt. Don just called in to report that today's codfishing continued
to show strong signs of improvement with more than double the
catch of yesterday including a very strong bite the last hour
of the day. Nothing big but all nice fat healthy green cod up
to just over 10lbs taken by anglers and some ocean perch mixed
in..Capt. Don reported seeing piles of bait and again the codfish
were spitting up herring. He also reported some whales on the
local fishing grounds. The weather was fantastic and it was just
a beautiful day to be on the water.
April 13th
This past weekend's offshore groundfish trip found anglers into
lots of action with the codfish unfortunately the throwback to
keeper ratio was not quite what we had hoped for. Hi hooks caught
as many as twenty fish. A handful of nice haddock and a couple
decent wolfish mixed in as well. There was bait and whales all
over the grounds which should bring better fishing in the days
to come.
April 12th
Capt. Rich reported that today turned out to be a very pleasant
day on the local codfish grounds. A sour weather forecast provided
a very small turnout but the anglers that decided to go fishing
enjoyed some much improved action with the cod. We fished close
to home and it was nearly a one stop day. Not a fast bite but
anglers would get a few fish then a while later a few more would
come to gaff and so on and by the end of the trip most anglers
went home with enough fresh cod for a hearty dinner. Nothing big
but all nice green fish loaded with herring. A decent number of
shorts as well. The largest was around 10lbs. Singns of warmer
weather were seen all day with one nice blackfish caught and promptly
released and one lucky angler caught an enormous snowshoe flounder
which measured 19.5 inches in length! We even had a few brief
rain showers while the sun was out and could hear thunder in the
far distance. Some big ocean perch, a few supersize ocean pout
and a nice hake rounded out the days catch. Capt. Rich reported
seeing piles and piles of bait from near shore to the fishing
grounds. The Frances Fleet is armed with super fresh surf clams
and will be ready to go after codfish tommorrow morning at 7am.
The Lady Frances will be the codfish boat.
April 11th
Capt. Mike reported that today was the nicest day weatherwise
on the water so far this year. Flat calm seas and balmy temperatures
made for a very comfortable angling experience. Unfortunately
codfishing was kind of quiet today. Anglers did manage to pick
away at some good size red hake including a couple real brutes
of over 5lbs! A few jumbo ocean pout and a few handfuls of large
ocean perch mixed in as well. Tommorrow's cod trip will sail at
7am on the Admiral Frances.
April 10th
Tommorrow's forecast looks like it should be a bluebird day on
the water with little wind and balmy temperatures in comparison
to what we have been experiencing. We look forward to a good day
of local codfishing on the Lady Frances at 5am.
April 9th
Capt. Mike reported the local codfishing was slow today. Bill
from Pawtucket took the pool with a fine 10lb codfish. We did
see quite a few more hake than on Saturday and a few big cunners
and ocean pout to round out the catch. Still marking tons of bait
around Block Island both shrimp and herring have been coming out
of the codfish recently. Friday looks like a gem of a spring day
with light winds and comfortable temperatures. Capt. Mike will
be running the Lady Frances at 5am for local codfish.
April 8th
The weather looks pretty good for tommorrow and the Capt. and
crew of the Frances Fleet looks forward to an enjoyable spring
day of local codfishing. The Lady Frances will be sailing at 5am
sharp. Friday is also looking like a nice day as well and the
same agenda should apply.
April 7th
The Northeast winds keeps blowing and blowing. No boat today
due to the weather conditions. The crew is ready to sail Wednesday,
the forecast looks like a favorable one, finally! Tuesday night's
Gulf of Maine Trip will unfortunately be cancelled. There were
a few boats fishing up North this past weekend and reports were
that the fishing tapered off due in part because of the heavy
Northeast wind. We feel that we need to give it a few days to
calm down and hopefully the fishing will pick right back up again.
There is still plenty of room on the next couple of Gulf of Maine
Trips.
Please Note: Even though our brochure and website states that
our day cod trips start sailing at 7:00 a.m. beginning April 14th,
we will in fact start sailing at 7:00 a.m. this coming weekend,
April 12th. Again, 7:00 a.m. beginning Satruday April 12th.
April 6th
Nothing like a little more northeast wind! No trip today and
tommorrow does not look good either but the weatherman is forecasting
much more tranquil conditions by midweek. Next scheduled trip
will set sail at 5am Wednesday for local cod.
April 5th
Capt. Don reported that despite seeing acres upon acres of bait
with fish beneath the codfish just were not that interested in
hook baits today. Nevertheless anglers did get a few with Jackie
from Boothbay ME taking todays pool with a fine fat green codfish.
A few hake, choggies and pout rounded out the day's action. Next
codfish trip sails tommorrow morning at 5am on the Lady Frances.
April 4th
The weather did us in once again today. Tommorrow's weather looks
much much better and we look forward to getting out and doing
some early spring codfishing. The trip will sail at 5am aboard
the Lady Frances.
April 2nd
Nothing like a little more wind!! Unfortunately today's local
cod trip had to be scrapped due to gale warnings. Friday's local
cod trip is cancelled as well, just more wind and rain! The George's
Special scheduled for this weekend is also cancelled due to the
bad weather forecasted offshore.
However, things look good for local codfishing this weekend and
we plan on sailing both Saturday and Sunday at 5am on the Lady
Frances.
March 30th
Capt. Mike reported another very enjoyable day of local fishing.
It started blustery but by late morning we were able to drift
and by the end of the day the ocean was as calm as a lake. While
the cod did not cooperate all that well today the red hake took
center stage with anglers catching upwards to a dozen nice ling
apiece.Sizes on the ling to nearly 4lbs. Again those behemoth
ocean perch or choggies made their presence known today with sizes
up to 18 inches! Some jumbo ocean pout in the bags as well. Next
cod trip is scheduled to sail Wednesday morning at 5am weather
permitting. Still some openings on this coming weekends Georges
Special which sets sail Friday Night at 10pm.
Capt. Don reported that the Tim Pelletier charter from Western
Massachusetts also enjoyed a beautiful day on the water even though
the codfish were not as cooperative as anglers had hoped for.
Still the group did manage a few nice cod, some pout and some
ling and some throwbacks. For those interested in private charters
please call the office for rates and available booking.
March 29th
Capt. Don reported that today turned out
to be a rather pleasant day fishing around Block Island. While
a bit brisk and chilly it was really quite comfortable and the
fishing showed some signs of improvement. Still a far cry from
the red hot fishing two weeks ago but rather encouraging. Mostly
school size cod today and not as many keepers as we would have
liked but quite a few shorts, most of which were within an inch
of the size limit. The cod were taken on both bait and jigs and
teasers today. Anglers also caught lots of choggies otherwise
known as ocean perch and or bergalls. These smaller relatives
of the blackfish family make for outstanding table fare! Many
of these ocean perch were in the 2 to 3lb range! Ling and some
jumbo ocean pout rounded out the days catch. Again we marked a
tremendous amount of bait and fish in the area. All that is needed
is a little more continued cooperation from the weatherman and
things should really bust wide open. Next codfish trip will set
sail at 5am on the Lady Frances tommorrow morning.
March 28th
DUE TO THE WEATHER TONIGHT'S NANTUCKET
WRECK TRIP IS CANCLLED. SATURDAY'S LOCAL CODFISH TRIP IS SCHEDULED
TO SET SAIL AT 5AM ON THE LADY FRANCES.
STARTING IN APRIL WE WILL BE ADDING MONDAYS
TO OUR LOCAL CODFISH SAILING SCHEDULE.
March 22nd
Capt. Mike reported that today turned out to be a rather nice
early spring day on the water weatherwise. Modest amounts of wind
at best however fishing efforts were hampered by some of the strongest
lunar tides this angler has ever seen around Block Island. 20
ounces was needed to just barely hold bottom!! Some great showings
on the machine but the codfish just didnt seem to be all that
interested in eating today. Strong tides and a week's worth of
gale force winds were likely to blame. Nevertheless the pool was
taken by Matt from Boston with a fine green fish that tipped the
scales at 22lbs. The days catch included a mixed bag of jumbo
choggies, hake, ocean pout and a few small codfish. Starting in
April we will be adding Mondays to the sailing schedule and we
would also like to remind anglers that there is plenty of room
on the upcoming Nantucket Wreck Trip which sets sail this coming
Friday Night at 10pm.
March 21st
Captain Mike will be sailing Saturday morning on the Lady Frances
at 5 am. The office will open at 4 am. The wind is going to ease
off this afternoon and it should be an okay day tomorrow. We haven't
sailed since last week so we don't have an updated report to give.
All we know is the last time we sailed with good weather the fishing
was very good.
March 18 th 3 pm
There will be no trips on Wednesday the 19 th because of the
weather. Winter just won't go away. The forecast is for wind,
snow and rain. We just can't catch a brake we have great fishing
and terrible weather.
March 16 th 1 am
We are sorry to say that we are canceling today's trip. The forecast
was just updated to NE winds up to 40 knots. This is after we
told everyone that we would be sailing. Unfortunately there is
nothing we can do about the weather. Fishing gets good and the
weather goes to S#*%!
March 15 th 11 am
Can't we catch a brake? Fishing has been great all week and the
weather has been good for March. We have had small crowds and
good fishing. Today we had a good crowd of people onboard with
cabin fever ready to fill their coolers with cod fish. The offshore
storm came a little closer then planned. Capt Mike just called
in saying it is horrendous out on the water. It is unfishable
and he is heading home early. The managed a few fish but a far
cry from what it has been all week. He is making about 6 knots
with green water coming over the bow. It would be nice if the
forecasters would get the predictions right every now and then.
The wind is suppose to drop out tonight so we are hoping for a
better day on Sunday. Call the office after 4 PM and we will let
you know about tomorrow.
March 14 th 1 pm
The Gail Frances sailed this morning with a little bigger crowd.
Captain Mike said they had good fishing as soon as the boat got
to the grounds. There were fish all around the boat. The biggest
fish today were around 20 pounds not as big as Wed. but still
very good action. They put over 150 fish in the boat on just the
first few drifts. We will have a full update when the boat gets
back to the dock. For some reason people went home this morning
not wanting to go on a crowed boat. There was plenty of room on
the boat. The boat was less than half full. Tomorrow we will be
using the Lady Frances. The boat just got back from the boat yard
last night and will be ready to sail in the morning. On Wednesday
trip, Joel St. Germain and Rob Richards teamed up for 17 keeper
cod of which three were over 25 lbs. We will be sailing in the
morning at 5 am and the office will be open at 4 am.
March 12 th 2 pm
Captain Mike called in from the Gail Frances and reported a good
day of local codfishing. He said they had 6 fish over 30 pounds
and plenty of fish between 15 and 25 pounds. This is by far the
best day of local codfishing this winter. We will have a full
report once the boat get back to the dock. Next trip will be 5
am on Friday morning. There was a light crowd onboard today. It
looks like everyone called yesterday just to see if we were sailing.
Well we did. If you didn't show you missed out on some good action.
March 10 th
The Lady Frances is almost ready to go back in the water. The
crew is all excited with the great news about the local cod fishing.
Captain Mike is planning on sailing Wed. morning at 5 am with
Capt Paul. The clam boat is digging tomorrow so we will have nice
fresh bait for the week. Cory caught another 150 LB sword fish
this week in Florida., He has heard how good the local cod fishing
is and is going to head north so he can get in on the spring action.
The office is open week days from 9 to 5 for reservations and
information
.
March 8 th
The good new is that this past week there was some of the best
cod fishing seen south of Block Island in 20 years. The bad news
is we missed it all. The Lady Frances was out of the water for
her annual spring paint job. The boats that were fishing had a
great week. The party boats out of Montauck were coming back to
the docks early with record catches of cod up to nearly 40 pounds.
The fish were hitting on bait and on jigs. From all accounts this
was as good as cod fishing gets. The Lady will be back in the
water this week and we will be ready for action. We will be sailing
Wed. Fri. Sat and Sundays. If the fishing keep up this good we
will be adding days to the schedule
.Monday, March 3, 11am
Winter weather kept the Frances Fleet boats tied to the dock
this past week. It is too bad because the commercial boats reported
that they where catching lots of codfish. The cod fish have been
chasing schools of herring just south of Block Island. We are
hoping for a little better weather no that spring is just around
the corner. Cory Blount is still in Florida catching swordfish,
sail fish and Mahi Mahi. He went down for 5 days and has been
there for two months.
The RI Fish Council will be meeting over the next couple of weeks
to set this years regulations for scup, seabass, blackish and
Fluke. You should make an attempt to go to there meetings so your
voice can be heard. If things go well we should have 7 fluke and
no closed season. Keep your fingers crossed.
The George's Bank trip for this coming weekend is going to have
to be canceled. The boat yard called us on Friday and they have
an open spot for us this coming week so we will be hauling the
Lady Frances out and giving her a fresh coat of paint. We are
planning on being back in the water in time to sail for the Nantucket
wreck trip the following weekend.
Sunday, February 24th
The Lady Frances has made it out codfishing the past two Sundays.
Last Sunday's action was much better than today's. Last Sunday
anglers had a nice mix of large red hake, a few nice cod to 10lbs
and some truly giant bergalls. Today despite marking bait piles
of herring thirty plus feet high the codfish just seemed to have
lockjaw. Still plenty of good signs south and east of Block Island
and everything bodes well for the weeks ahead.
Friday February 15th
Due
to severe cold temperatures tonight and wind forecasted for tomorrow,
Saturday February 16th, the boat will not be sailing. As of right
now, the forecast looks good for Sunday but you might want to
give us a call Saturday afternoon.
Friday February 8 Th.
The Lady Frances is scheduled to sail at 5 am Sat. morning. The
weather for Sat is the best for the weekend. Sundays trip will
likely be canceled. Unfortunately the boat did not sail today.
We are not sure why people call and say they are coming down and
then don't show up. The crew gets the boat ready and others drive
down after we tell them we have had enough calls to sail. We try
to let everyone know how many we except in the mornings so please
if you are not going to show up please don't ay that you are going
to.
Wednesday February 6th
Cory Blount just called the office to say he is having a great
trip with his Uncle Eric in Fla. They have been fishing every
chance that the get. He had to laugh when after traveling 1000
miles the first fish he caught was a blue fish. His laughing soon
changed to utter excitant. In the last two night of fishing Cory
has caught 6 Swordfish himself. That is right 6! Cory said he
is searching for a dock for the Gail Frances. He is trying to
talk his dad into bringing the boat to Fla. You never know. What
Capt Frank is likely to do.
Monday February 4 Th. .2 PM
The Lady Frances sailed yesterday with a few more people then
the last couple of trips. They came out to enjoy the nice almost
spring day. Shana Kuhse group of 4 had a good day with a total
of 37 fish. A mix of cod and hake. The weather looks okay for
the week. We are planning on sailing Wed, Fri, Sat and Sunday
at 5 am. Make sure you call the office before heading down to
the docks.
Sunday January 27 at 11am.
Captain Mike at the Frances Fleet reports that it was a successful
week on the cod grounds. Once again the boat sailed with only
a few people on each trip. On Saturday's trip high hook was 6
cod fish. The pool fish was in the mid teens. The hake were not
as plentiful as last week but there were still a few around. The
fish have all been located in about 130 feet of water se of Block
Island. We are still scheduled to sail 4 days week at 5 am. Keep
in mind to always call before you head down to the docks. The
office is open 9 to 4 on weekdays. We try to update the answering
machine for the weekend sailing information. If you need additional
information and can not reach us on the phone please email us
and we will try to get back to you as soon as we can.
Nick Blount also wants to thank Capt Joe for a good trip this
week. Nick fished with Joe on Sat and came home with a nice mix
of fish. He is trying to talk his dad into making some more offshore
trips but he is going to have to wait until we start them up in
March.
Wednesday January 15th 7pm
Captain Mike and mate Chris sailed to day with only a dozen anglers
onboard. The the cod fishing was off from pervious trips but the
still had a few. The also had fairly good numbers of hake with
everyone going home with a few for dinner.
Monday, January 13 Th. at 11am.
The Lady Frances sailed Sunday with another light crowd. People
must be staying home to watch football games or some thing. The
results for the day were about the same as Saturday. The largest
cod for the weekend was a 23 pounder. There have been a few small
pollack around.
Saturday January 11th at 8 pm.
The Lady Frances sailed this morning with another light crowd.
There certainly has been plenty of room at the rails. Captain
Mike reported fish on every drop. Today there were far more cod
fish then at the beginning of the week. It was a gorgeous day
on the water with nice fresh clams.. The biggest fish were in
the teens. There weren't as many hake as some of the past trips
but they still managed to put nearly 50 hake over the rails. The
also had lots of big burgauls. The other good news was there were
not as many dogfish. Maybe they have left for the winter. The
boat will be sailing again at 5 am Sunday morning. The office
will reopen Monday at 9 am if you need to make a reservation.
Monday January
7th at 11 am.
The Lady Frances sailed on Sunday with another small group of
anglers. The report for the day was about the same as Saturday's.
There were fewer hake in the mix. Captain Mike found a huge pile
of bait but the fish were already full. The last hour of the day
was very slow. It is unfortunate that we do not sail on Monday's
and Tuesdays at this time of the year because the weather out
side is the nicest that it has been in awhile.
Saturday January 5 th at 11 am.
The Lady Frances sailed this morning with only a dozen lucky
anglers. They should be in for a treat with the boat all to themselves.
Sunday morning looks like a repeat of today. The Lady Frances
will be sailing at 5 a and return approximately 3 pm. On the last
trip there was very good numbers of red hake high hook had nearly
20 plus a few cod. The office will reopen on Monday morning at
9 am.
Saturday December 29 th 3 pm.
The Lady Frances is schedule to sail at 7 am Sunday morning.
Yesterday a first time angler using a spinning rod was high hook
for the day. He end up with 14 fish a combination of cod fish
and hake. Nick B brought home some tasty cod fish which was served
up for lunch today. He ended the day with a total of 9 fish. There
is nothing better then fresh cod fish. He is looking forward to
fishing again tomorrow.
Friday December 28th 2 pm
Captain Rich called into say it was a beautiful day on the water.
They were catching a few cod and red hake. The largest cod was
in the teens. The weather for Saturday does not look as good.
The forecast is calling 30 knots of wind out of the south. We
will not be sailing on Saturday. The winds are suppose to be much
better on Sunday and Monday.
Thursday December 27th 10 am
Captain Richie and Mike took the Lady Frances out yesterday with
a handful of anglers. The weather conditions were nice for a change.
No real big cod yesterday. Most of the fish were in the 7 to 10
pound range. There are still a few sea bass around and they are
seeing more and more red hake on most trips. They also had one
large silver hake yesterday. Tomorrow Friday looks like the nicest
day of the weekend. The boat is still sailing at 7 am. Keep in
mind that after the first of the year we will be sailing at 5
am.
Monday December 24th.
Merry Christmas to all. The Lady Frances sailed on Saturday with
a handful of anglers. The fishing was fair for the day. The sea
bass fishing not very good with the windy conditions Captain Rich
was forced to anchor. The last few trips the sea bass hit better
on the drift. In addition to cod fish the boat was treated to
good numbers of red hake. One happy angler was high hook for the
day with 4 keeper cod fish plus a bunch of hake. We will be sailing
on Wed the 26 th at 7 am on the Lady Frances. Keep in mind starting
in January we will be sailing at 5 am..
Wednesday, December 19 th
The Lady Frances sailed today with only a handful of people.
The cod fish was on the slow side with 4 to 1 keepers to shorts.
The sea bass fishing was better then the last few trips. They
also had the first red hake of the season. The weather was very
nice today so the boat was able to drift most of the day. We will
be trying to sail Friday at 7am. Always make sure to call the
office before you head down to the docks.
Tuesday
December 18th
The
crew has been busy cleaning the snow and ice off of the boats.
We are planning on sailing Wed morning for cod at 7 am. on the
Lady Frances with Capt Richie and Capt Mike. Some of the crew
has been commercial fishing this past week and the reports have
been very good. There is a large body of herring around so there
is plenty of food for the cod fish. It has been over a week since
our last cod trip so we don't have any currant reports. Check
back after tomorrow trip.
Black
Fishing ended this past weekend. The last trip was very slow.
The fish are moving into the deeper water for the winter. It was
one of the best season we have had in both size of fish and in
numbers.
Wednesday December 12
Things have been a little
quiet at the Frances Fleet over the last few days.Blackfishing
over the weekend was fair, not the numbers we had seen on previous
trips. The weather kept us in on Monday but Tuesday's trips saw
some nice quality fish up to and over 11 lbs. The weather again
was not too cooperative for today's trip and long range looks
a little questionable, so be sure to call ahead for the latest
weather report. Blackfishing is scheduled through this weekend,
weather permitting. Cod fishing over the weekend produced a few
nice cod fish and a handful of seabass for anglers. Codfishing
wil continue right throught the winter but keep in mind, the sailing
time changes to 5:00 a.m. beginning in January.
Friday, December 7th 5pm
Capt. Mike reported a very
good day of late season blackfishing today. A lot of quality tog
up to 10lbs and two fine fat green keeper codfish today. Mr. Co
from New York nailed his limit with fish up to nearly 10lbs while
Jacob had his limit of blackfish including the pool with a fish
just over 10lbs and he also had another one just under 10lbs.
Quite a few of the anglers aboard averaged a solid 5-8 keepers
each. Next blackfish trip will set sail tommorrow morning at 6am.
Capt. Rich reported a very
small group of anglers enjoyed a decent day of local codfishing.
Anglers got a few keeper cod very close and then heading out to
some deeper water anglers had a pick of throwback and keeper cod
to 8lbs and a decent pick of nice seabass up to 4lbs. Hi hook
on the cod had 4 keepers while hi hook on the seabass had 15 keepers.
The local waters are teeming with bait and there are good signs
of codfish everywhere. This fishing should only get better and
better. Anglers also had a few nice red hake and one angler had
a big conger eel. Some good catch and release fishing for platter
size scup to nearly 3lbs as well. Next cod trip sets sail tommorrow
at 7am.
Thursday, December 6th 9am
Now that the holiday season
is fast approaching the Frances Fleet would like to let everyone
know that gift certificates are now available for your favorite
fisherman. They can be purchased over the phone or in person.
If you are planning to come down to the office please call ahead.
For phone orders kindly call the office at 1-800-66-CATCH during
normal business hours which are Monday through Friday from 9am
to 4pm.
Tommorrow sounds like a good
day weather wise to go out and do some fishing. It is suppossed
to be slightly milder with less wind. Cod/Seabass fishing is set
to sail at 7am and Blackfish is set to sail at 6am.
Wednesday, December 5th 5pm
Capt. Don reported that a
very small group of hardy anglers enjoyed a good but frigid day
on the water today. The fishing was solid with anglers getting
an average of 5-6 good tog apiece and action all day long with
small fish as well with some guys throwing back as many as 30plus
per man. Several big fish in the 7-9lb range to fight out pool
honors. Next blackfish trip will sail Friday at 6am and on Friday
the cod/seabass boat sets sail at 7am.
Saturday, December 3rd 10 am.
Both boats sailed on Sunday. The weather was cold but the fish
didn't care. The Lady Frances found some real quality Black Fish.
The numbers were not quite as good as other trips but after the
big blow on Saturday the fishing was a little better then expected.
A 12 pound cod fish took the pool. We will not be sailing on Tuesday
but will try again on Wed. Morning at 6 am. We will be sailing
until the 16th for black fish.
Captain Rihie ahd a good day on the Gail Frances. A very light
crowd was treated to 100 plus sea bass and over 25 keeper cod.
With all the dirty water it was nice to see the fish keeping their
appetites.. This has been a very good fall for the cod and sea
bass boat. All indications are it should be a good winter.. Next
trip Wed at 7am.
Saturday, December 1 st 4 pm
The Lady Frances sailed today and Captain Mike put the boat into
some great black fishing. The day was cut short buy gale force
winds but most anglers onboard had between 6 an 8 fish and the
boat was back at the dock at 12:30. Regular Kunieo had 2 fish
over 10 pounds and still lost the pool to a monster 11.5 pounder.
Both boats will be sailing Sunday morning. The Lady Frances at
6 am for black fish and the Gail Frances for cod and sea bass
at 7. Dress warm but remember the the lady Frances has heated
rails for your comfort and both boats have nice warm heated cabins.
Wednesday, November 28th 5pm
Capt. Richie reported an okay
day of local codfishing. The weather turned out to be gorgeous
despite being a tad chilly but hey it is late November. There
was a tremendous amount of tide today which may have helped keep
the dogfish numbers down as they were almost nonexistant after
the first stop today. The codfish action was decent overall today.
The first stop in shallow water only an hour from the dock produced
a fast pick of throwback and a handful of market cod for about
half an hour before they moved off. Later working a bit farther
offshore anglers picked away at a mixed bag that included codfish
up to 14lbs, seabass to 4lbs, a couple pollock in the 10lb range,
some big ling to over 4lbs and a couple bluefish to 10lbs. The
avarage was around half a dozen seabass per man with the majority
being good size fish. Angler hilights included Tom from Stamford,Ct
who won the pool with his fine fat green codfish of 14lbs to go
along with his good size seabass. Lou from Niantic,Ct was hi hook
today with 4 cod to 10lbs to go along with a nice bunch of seabass.
There were a lot of short cod today with some anglers catching
upwards to 10 throwbacks apiece which is a very encouraging sign
for the future. Also every cod caught no matter the size were
green fish which are fish in the process of moving onto the local
grounds. We also noted stack after stack of bait all over the
cod grounds and both the cod and pollock were spitting up herring
and baby butterfish. Things look very encouraging locall for December.
Next scheduled cod trip sets sail at 7am on Friday morning.
Capt. Mike reported the local
blackfishing was decent today but a little slower overall than
we have been used to. Longtime regular Leon Skolink from Danbury,Ct
had the pool with a fine 11lb chinner. There were a couple limit
catches today and some of the other sharpies had around a half
dozen nice tog each but numbers were down a bit, which very well
may be due to the dirty water from the hard southerly blow of
the past couple days. A fine 6lb codfish topped off the days catch
of tog. Next blackfish trip will set sail Friday morning at 6am.
Monday November 26th 10:00 a.m.
Capt. Richie reported an okay weekend on the the
cod and seabass boat. Some nice quality cod up to 20 lbs. with
seabass and a few pollock mixed in. Unfortunately the dogfish
action on Sunday was a bit more than we would have liked to see.
Hopefully their visit here is a short one. Mike was at the helm
on the blackfish boat all weekend and reported the action still
to be good. Sunday was a little slower than it has been but by
no means a "slow" day. Still plenty of hefty limits
to go around.
Monday November 26th 4:30 p.m.
Capt. Don at the helm today on the blackfish boat.
Fishing couldn't have been better. The boat limited out with the
biggest fish weighing in around 9 lbs. Not much more can be said.
There was only a handful of people on the boat. If you are looking
for some blackfish for your freezer, get down here before December
16th., that will be our last blackfish trip of the season.
Friday, November 23 rd 4pm
Both
boats just returned from their day trips. Captain Rich on the
Gail Frances had an okay day even with the windy conditions. They
had cod up to nearly 20 pounds and averaged 3 or better fish per
person The seabass didn't bite as good today but considering the
conditions it was a good day
Captain
Mike on the Lady Frances also had another good day. High hook
today was 40 keeper blackfish. Steve from team Taiwan was unstoppable.
He had his limit on the first drop and was releasing fish after
that. He also took the pool today with a nice 10 pounder. The
crowd was very light today for black Friday. The anglers onboard
were treated to good fishing and plenty of room at the rails..
Both
boats will be sailing Sat. morning.
Wednesday, November 21st 4pm
Capt. Rich reported a very
enjoyable day on the local grounds fishing for cod and seabass.
The action was decent overall with a steady pick of keeper seabass
including some jumbos in the 4-5lb range. Anglers had 5-15 keeper
seabass apiece. There were a few bluefish of various size mixed
in and one lucky angler nailed a fine 7lb tatoug. Anglers did
get a few small codfish today with one nice green fish in the
teens boated. Quite a few large choggies up to 3lbs mixed in.
A few dogfish around but they were certainly manageable. Next
codfish trip sets sail Friday morning at 7am.
Capt. Mike reported blackfishing
was good today. There were a few limit catches and anglers did
put some truly big tog in the boat. Corey Blount and Kris Konkol
both boated 10lb chinners today and Mr. Kim had the biggest for
the day of 11.5lbs. A lot of anglers had around a half dozen nice
tog apiece. Quite a few shorts to keep anglers busy at the rail
as well. It was all blackfish except for one throwback codfish.
Next blackfish trip will set sail Friday morning at 6am.
Tuesday, November 20th 4pm
Capt. Mike reported the inevitable
finally happened today aboard the blackfish boat. The fishing
was off a bit. Still pretty good by any standards but not quite
the frantic pace of the last few weeks. There were a few limits
today and quite a few anglers had 4-8 good tog apiece. No real
bruisers today but still a couple fish in the 8-9lb range to fight
it out for top honors for the pool. Skill was really neccessary
today as the blackfish bite was especially soft and fickle with
smaller pieces of bait seeming to be the ticket to success for
some anglers. A couple good seabass mixed in and a fine keeper
codfish taken by Cory Blount to top things off. Next blackfish
trip will set sail Wednesday morning at 6am.
Tuesday, November 20th 4am
Capt. Mike reported the Lady
Frances sailed for blackfish the past three days and will do so
again today. Saturday saw excellent fishing with the usual anglers
getting their limits and plenty of good size tog all around the
boat. There were a lot of fish in the 10lb range. Sunday the action
was good with just a handful of anglers limiting out but what
was really impressive on Sunday was the size of the blackfish.
There were many fish over 10lbs with the larest a fine chinner
of 13lbs. Some anglers had two or three fish apiece in the 10lb
plus range! Monday the fishing was nothing short of extraordinary
with everyone on board limiting out and the boat was back to the
dock early! Again quite a few bruisers with the largest tackle
busting tog in the 11-12lb range. A few seabass in the mix most
days as well.
Capt. Rich saied over the
weekend on the Gail Frances for cod and seabass and reported the
action was pretty good. Good numbers of nice size seabass and
some nice codfish into the mid to upper teens with Sunday's action
the best over the weekend but both days were days of solid fishing.
A few bluefiish and a couple snowshoe flounder to 4lbs! Also all
the catch and release fishing for hubcap size scup one could dream
of. Next codfish trip will set sail tommorrow morning at 7am and
it looks like a great day to go out and try for a Rhode Island
Turkey!
Friday, November 16th 3pm
Blustery! That is the word
that describes today's day on the water. A small group of hardy
anglers braved the hard NW wind to get in on some blackfish action.
The fishing was solid with the biggest prohibitive factor being
not able to really feel the bite due to the strong winds. There
were limit catches, Jacob, Choi, and Ray from New York limited
out on tog to 9lbs. The majority of anglers walked off the boat
with a nice bag of blackfish fillets. Next blackfish trip will
set sail tommorrow morning at 6am.
Thursday, November 15th 5pm
The Frances Fleet will be
sending only a blackfish boat out tommorrow morning at 6:30am
and returning at 4pm on the Lady Frances. The sailing schedule
will be back to normal on Saturday, November 17th with a cod/seabass
boat at 7am and a blackfish boat at 6am.
Wednesday, November 14th 5pm
Capt. Richie reported the
seabass action was good but not quite as hot and heavy as on Monday.
There were more jumbo seabass in the mix today with a decent number
of seabass in the 3 to 5lb range taken by the anglers. Fishermen
had from a half dozen to 15 seabass apiece to take home today.
A respectable showing of nice codfish today as well. Mickey Moh
from Aududon,NY had 3 fine cod including fish of 20,17 and 10lbs
to go along with his 13 nice seabass while longtime regular customer
Marty Dougherty had a fine 15lb codfish to top off his catch of
nice seabass. Another longtime customer fishing in the middle
of the boat nailed a fat 17lb cod and a dozen good seabass including
4 seabass over 4lbs. A couple snowshoe flounder and a few red
hake plus quite a few big bergalls and a good bunch of bluefish
of mixed sizes to round out the catch. Anglers also had plenty
of catch and release action with supersize scup to nearly 4lbs!
Again hardly and dogfish to speak of and this has been one of
the most dogfish free weeks since codfishing began! Next cod/seabass
trip sets sail on Friday at 7am. As always this time of year please
give the office a call the night before to check on the next day's
weather.
Capt. Mike reported another
excellent day of local blackfishing. There were quite a few limits
today with 4 fish over 10lbs and two fish over 11lbs fighting
it out for the pool. One gigantic blackfish estimated at 13lbs
was lost right before it could be gaffed! This season has seen
a great number of truly large blackfish taken and the season is
just underway! Plenty of good tog in the 5-8lb range and anglers
also had a good number of nice seabass today to go along with
their blackfish. Another keeper codfish and one that had to go
back today. Next blackfish trip will set sail Friday at 6am.
Tuesday, November 13th 6pm
Capt. Mike reported an excellent
day of local blackfishing today. The action was consistant all
day and the catch was very spread out so everyone went home with
some nice fresh blackfish fillets. There were some limits including
Kevin Sellers from Ct who had his limit of fine tog to over 8lbs
while Bob from Westwood,NJ had his limit of blackfish to 9lbs
and Eben York from Newburgh,NY limited out on tog to 10lbs. A
half dozen blackfish of 10lbs or greater were taken today with
the largest being a 14lb monster taken by Abraham Choi from White
Plains, NY. Most anglers averaged a half dozen or better good
size fish apiece with most of the fish falling into the 5-8lb
range. Plenty of shorts to keep anglers busy at the rail all day
as well. A bunch of keeper seabass to top off today's fine catch
of tog added some variety. Next blackfish trip sets sail tommorrow
morning at 6am on the Lady Frances.
Monday, November 12th 5pm
Capt. Richie reported the
seabass fishing today was nothing short of extraordinary today.
At times the action was an all out bail job with every rod bent
over up and down the boat. Double headers were commonplace. Quite
a few anglers were limited out with the rest all getting at least
a dozen to 20 keeper seabass apiece. Largest seabass for the day
was around 4lbs. Anglers also had a few handfulls of nice codfish
to 20lbs with the majority of the cod nice green fish in the 8-12lb
range. A sprinkling of red hake to 4lbs and a bunch of good size
bluefish up to 10lbs mixed in. One angler even caught a large
conger eel or silver eel. Today also featured some of the biggest
kind of choggies or cunners with many of them in the 2-3lb range.
More good news: Hardly any dogfish all day! Angler hilights included
Carlos from the Bronx who had 3 fine cod to 20lbs and his limit
of seabass while Paul from Marlboro,Ma had 3 cod to 12lbs and
his limit of seabass. The seabass fishing has been steadily building
for the last couple weeks and this fishing should hold up for
some time to come. Anglers were also treated to a great show as
they watched one school of dolphins after another swim along side
the boat both on the way out to the grounds and on the way back.
For those bird enthusiasts we are seeing many offshore/winter
birds now as well. Next cod/seabass trip sails Wednesday morning
at 7am.
Capt. Mike reported that blackfishing
was excellent again today. Anglers enjoyed steady action with
good size blackfish in the 4-8lb range with sizes up to 10lbs.
There were some limits and many anglers had a half dozen or more
good size tog apiece. A few nice seabass and two fine keeper codfish
to top off a great catch of tog. Next blackfish trip will sail
tommorrow morning at 6am.
Capt. Don reported the Toni
Pansette charter was very successful today. The anglers wanted
to target both seabass and blackfish and both species were quite
cooperative. The hilight of the day was a fat green codfish of
over 10lbs caught just south of Pt. Judith! It was a beautiful
calm day on the water with lots of action keeping rods bent throughout
the day.
Monday, November 12th 5am
Capt. Mike reported that despite
less than ideal weather conditions over the weekend, the blackfish
bite was strong both days. Saturday featured a cold northerly
wind in excess of 25 knots at times, nevertheless anglers boated
over 100 nice blackfish with sizes to nearly 10 pounds. Sunday
featured excellent action throughout the day with some very big
blackfish in the mix. The pool winner was 14.1lbs! There were
quite a few limits and most anglers went home with a nice bunch
of fresh blackfish fillets. A few nice seabass in the mix as well
both days.
Capt. Rich reported a very
good day on the cod/seabass boat Sunday. Anglers enjoyed a solid
pick of large and jumbo seabass with sizes to 6lbs! Numbers varied
per angler but ranged upwards to 15 of the big seabass per man.
The cod also made a nice showing yesterday and exhibited a vast
improvement over last week's action. A young man from Pennsylvania
on his first ever cod trip was pleased to haul in a fine 30lb
steaker. There was another cod in the mid 20s with the rest of
the cod all in the teens. The codfish were all fat healthy green
fish. Anglers also had a mix of big bluefish to the lower teens,
a snowshoe flounder, one slammer pollock of 20lbs and some very
big choggies. There was plenty of catch and release with the biggest
kind of scup to over 3lbs. Even more good news: The dogfish were
quite manageable.
Friday,
November 9th
Capt. Mike reported that today was the best blackfish day of the
season thus far. Fishing was very good all day but the last stop
of the day was an all out bail job with blackfish coming up all
around the boat, sometimes two at a time! Nearly the entire boat
was limited out! The size was also very impressive with Septegenarian
Jack Coyle winning the pool with a fine blackfish of 13.1lbs.
8-10lb fish were commonplace with several other fish in the low
teens weighed. Anglers also had quite a few nice seabass mixed
in as well with the largest around 3lbs. This is quickly shaping
up to be a blackfish season to remember.
Capt. Rich reported another good day with the seabass but not
all that many cod. A few good cod into the mid teens were boated
but the numbers are way down this week. Fortunately the seabass
have filled in nicely. A lot of jumbo seabass in the 4-6lb range
were boated today with quite a few other seabass in the 2-3lb
range. Anglers had upwards to 10 of the big seabass apiece. Anglers
also boated lots of bluefish with sizes from 4lbs to the lower
teens. A couple snowshoe flounder in the mix as well. Best of
all today besides the seabass and the nice weather was that the
dogfish were nearly non existant. Lets hope that trend continues.
We are also starting to see lots of offshore/winter birds over
the last week or so including gannets and shearwaters to name
a few. We also saw whales today near the cod grounds and there
are some signs of herring starting to move onto the cod grounds
so there are some very good signs for the upcoming weeks.
Wednesday,
November 7th
Capt. Rich reported a decent day on the cod/seabass boat today.
Most of the action was with the seabass but anglers did get a
few nice cod to 25lbs. Most anglers had around a half dozen good
seabass apiece with most in the large and jumbo category. Some
big bluefish into the lower teens and a couple large snowshoe
flounder. Best of all the dogfish were hardly noticeable.
Capt. Mike reported solid blackfishing today. There were some
limits and most anglers went home with a nice bag of fresh blackfish
fillets. Some keeper seabass as well in the mix. The largest blackfish
was around 10lbs. Lots of tog in the 4-8lb range. Quite a few
throwbacks as well keeping anglers busy all day.
Monday,
November 6th 4pm
Capt.
Rich reported today was one of those bluebird days in late fall
that codfishermen dream about. It was flat calm and crystal clear
and downright balmy! Hard to believe that Noel was raging through
the cod grounds just 48 hrs ago, however the latent effects from
the storm were felt as the codfish were just not eating. After
over six weeks of consistent fishing I guess we were due. Anglers
did pick away at a mixed bag of bottom fish that inluded mostly
large and jumbo seabass and a few big bluefish. Even the bergalls
and dogfsih were noticeably absent today! Anglers had upwards
to 10 seabass apiece with most anglers getting at least 3 to 5
each to take home. Quite a few seabass in the 3-4lb range with
the largest around 5lbs. A couple snowshoe flounder and some monster
scup to 3.5lbs which were caught and promptly released. The sounding
machine showed excellent signs of fish at every stop and we strongly
feel that we are headed for some great fall groundfishing in the
very near future.A gentleman by the name Edgr Cruz was on board
today for the first time in 12 years catching a few big seabass
and enjoying a beautiful day on the water and Edgar wanted to
say hello to his brother Sam and his father Edgr Sr. back in Guatemala
who frequently fished on the Frances Fleet years ago. Next cod/seabass
trip sails on Wednesday morning at 7am.
Capt.
Mike reported another very strong day aboard the blackfish boat.
Lots of nice tog in the 5-8lb range with the largest a fine chinner
of 9plus lbs taken by Dan Konkol as part of a fine catch of six
good fish. Kris Konkol had 7 nice fish and Eben York had 9 good
fish. There were a couple limit catches today but the catch was
rather spread out among tog anglers today with the majority of
anglers getting around a half dozen or so tog each. A few handfuls
of keeper seabass today as well for anglers.
Monday,
November 5th 5am
Capt.
Mike reported blackfishing was very good on Sunday. Considering
the weather the fishing far exceeded expectations with quite a
few anglers limiting out. Jung B Cho from South Korea and his
son in law Phillip Park from Seymour,Ct had a great day aboard
the Lady Frances catching nearly 20 nice blackfish and just as
many thorowbacks with their largest blackfish in the 8lb range.
The pool winning blackfish topped out at just over 9lbs. Next
blackfish trip sails today at 6am.
Friday,
November 2nd 4pm
Capt.
Rich reported a good day of codfishing. A small group of anglers
braved the cool breezy conditions( normal fall codfish weather)
and were rewarded by catching some nice green codfish. Nearly
all the cod were in the 10 to 20lb range. Bob from Waterford,Ct
had 3 codfish all in the 12-18lb range. Bill from Foster, RI had
4 good cod all in the 15-20lb range plus a couple good seabass..

ten years had 2 fine cod to 15lbs while Alex from Putnam,Ct nailed
2 nice cod in the mid teens. An angler fishing midship had 2 cod
in the 15-20lb range and a few nice seabass. Quite a few big bluefish
into the mid teens as well. There were some dogfish at times today
but not nearly as many as on Wednesday's trip
Capt.
Mike reported blackfishing was outstanding today. There were many
limit catches. Mike Kwok had his limit as did the crew from Hyanis
just to name a few.. Dave S was hi hook catching 18 keeper blackfish,
retaining only his limit. Most of the blackfish were in the 5-8lb
range with the largest a solid 10lbs. Another bonus today for
anglers was the number of keeper seabass mixed in with the largest
around 3lbs Some anglers had upwards to a half dozen seabass apiece.
A
note to anglers, due to the storm warnings posted for Saturday
there will be no fishing trips tommorrow. We are planning on sailing
on Sunday, please call the office Saturday afternoon to check
on Sunday's most current forecast.
Thursday,
November 1st Noon
The
Frances Fleet would like to thank all the Scup/Porgy customers
who made this past season of porgy fishing one to remember.
We
look forward to getting out after both the cod and blackfish tommorrow.
Keep an eye on the weather for Saturday's trips but Sunday sounds
like a nice day.
Wednesday,
October 31st 5pm
Capt.
Mike reported that the local blackfishing EXPLODED today! By far
the best trip of the season with one spot today producing non
stop action for several hours! Everybody went home with fish and
many anglers went home with thier limits. Angler highlights included
Mike from Maryland who nailed 28 keeper blackfish to 8lbs himself
retaining only his limit of course. Mr Pak was right behind catching
24 keepers including 2 fish over 10lbs and again retaining only
his limit. Cory and Christine Blount teamed up for 18 nice blackfish

to go along with his 8 other keeper blackfish and a fine keeper
codfish.. Eben York had 9 blackfish and 4 nice seabass in his
cooler.Mike Kwok had his limit of fine tog to 7lbs. Lots of good
size tog in the 5-8lb range today with more than a half dozen
tog over 10lbs including a fish well over 12lbs which was not
in the pool. Anglers also had quite a few good size seabass to
nearly 4lbs and some big scup to 2lbs. One lone red hake came
over the rail today as well. Over 200 keeper blackfish were boated
by customers today with quite a few anglers getting their limits
or dangerously close to it. Next blackfish trip sets sail at 6am
on Friday.
Capt.
Rich reported a very busy day on the cod grounds. Anglers got
into some really nice cod right off the bat with nice green fish
up to 25lbs before the dogfish and scup and seabass took over.
The scup were enormous with many of them in the 3lb range. Anglers
who focused more on the scup easily had 15 to 20 apiece. Anglers
also nailed some large and quite a few jumbo seabass up to 6lbs.
Hi hook had 7 seabass with most anglers getting at least one or
two. A few more cod made it in throughout the day along with some
throwbacks. Quite a few bluefish today as well as a couple large
snowshoe flounder. Hi hook for cod was Steven from Ct with 3 cod
to 12lbs. Jose from Bridgeport took the pool with a fine 25lbr
plus had at least a couple dozen good scup while Carlo from Stamford,Ct
had a cod of nearly 20lbs to go along with his fine catch of 7
jumbo seabass and dozen or so big scup.Jana Turner from Galilee,RI
nailed a fine 20lbr on her first cod trip ever and a scup over
3lbs. Next cod trip sets sail on Friday morning at 7am.
Tuesday,
October 30th 5pm

pick of mostly keeper tog throughout the day with some helfty
white chinners in the 6-8lb range. Tim and Eben combined for a
dozen big blackfish with Tim catching the pool fish with a fine
chinner of just over 9lbs. Steve from Mass had a good day as well
putting 7 tog to 7lbs in his cooler while Mr. Pak and Sin from
New York combined for nearly 20 good tog to 8lbs. An angler who
normally doesn't do much blackfishing managed his limit of tog
to 7lbs. Every day seems to get better and better. Some nice seabass
to 3lbs and a handful of keeper scup to top off the catch. Next
blackfish trip will set sail tommorrow morning at 6am.
Monday,
October 29th 5pm
Capt.
Rich reported a small group of anglers enjoyed a gorgeous fall
day on the inshore cod grounds and the fishing was very good.
Anglers boated a nice number of good size green codfish with the
largest in the mid 20s but fish in the 10 to 20lb range were the
norm. A few smaller keepers and some throwbacks as well. A decent
number of large and some jumbo scup today and a handful of big
seabass up to 6lbs plus a couple snowshoe founder and one nice
bluefish to top off the day's catch. Angler highlights included
Mike Kwok who nailed three nice cod including a brace of 20lbrs.
Bruce from New Britian,Ct who had codfish of 25 and 20lbs to go
along with a mess of nice scup. Jerry and Dave from upstate Rhode
Island had 4 nice codfish including two fish in the 18-20lb range.
Lou from Niantic,Ct nailed a fine cod in the low 20s while a longtime
customer who chose to remain anonymous had 4 good cod to 26lbs.
An angler fishing in the middle of the boat nailed 7 good codfish
to 22lbs plus a 6lb seabass and some hefty scup. Again the bite
of the cod was very soft and many good fish were dropped by anglers.
One angler dropped 6 good fish! To make a good day even better
there were hardly any dogfish all day long and the few that were
caught were taken on the scotchline rigs. A piece of fresh clam
on a 5/0 gold codfish hook close to the sinker is all that was
needed to be successful today. Next codfish trip will sail Wednesday
at 7am.
Capt.
Mike also had good news from the Tatoug trip which sailed today.
Anglers aboard caught a lot of good size blackfish to the 8lb
pool winner taken by Dean Mansfield from New London,Ct. Jacob
and Mr. Choi caught 20plus keeper blackfish, retaining only their
limit of course. Jeff and Dave, on a bussmans holiday from Hyanis
had a dozen fine keeper tatoug. Anglers also had some keeper scup
and seabass in the mix as well. Next blackfish trip sets sail
at 6am tommorrow morning.
Monday,
October 29th 5am
Capt.
Rich reported that the cod continued to cooperate this past weekend.
Saturday a small group of anglers braved some rain and sloppy
seas to connect with some nice codfish into the mid teens and
a big bunch of jumbo scup. Sunday's outing was even better. The
pool winning codfish was 40 pounds and there was another big fish
in the mid 30s and quite a few other good size codfish in the
15-25lb range that were brought to gaff. Anglers also had the
great mixed bag of delicious eating bottom fish that this time
of year is so well known for that included jumbo scup, huge seabass
to 6lbs, snowshoe flounder and big bluefish. Next codfish trip
sails today at 7am.
Capt.
Mike reported that Blackfishing got underway this past weekend
and the results were better than expected. Anglers connected with
some really nice tog each day. This week's cooler temperatures
will no doubt spark the crustacean crushing critter's appetites
further. Next blackfish trip will sail today at 6am.
Friday,
October 26th 3pm
Capt.
Ray reported another solid day of Block Island Scup fishing. Most
anglers filled a pail and were working on a second. Mixed sizes
but plenty of keeper fish to go around. A few more keeper seabass
than recent trips. Tomorrow will feature a combo trip on the Gail
Frances sailing at 7am fishing for cod, seabass and porgies and
whatever else may find their way over to the fresh clam baits.
Capt.
Rich reported that despite some rough seas and a few more dogfish
than desired the anglers aboard picked away at an assortment of
bottom dwellers that inluced a few handfuls of nice green codfish
to 25lbs, a lot of large and jumbo seabass from 2-6lbs, a few
jumbo scup and plenty of big bluefish inot the teens. Some anglers
had as many as 8-10 of the big seabass apiece.Again a note to
anglers tommorrow will feature just one combined trip for cod, seabass
and scup leaving at 7am on the Gail Frances.
Thursday,
October 25th 3pm
Capt.
Ray called in to say that despite some gusty northeast winds and
some rain a nice bunch of anglers came out to go porgy fishing
today. The hardy bunch of folk fished all day long and enjoyed
steady action with keeper size scup and a few keeper seabass and
plenty of short scup to keep everyone busy all day long. Hi hooks
were up around 40 keepers each. A few really big scup in the mix
with the largest around 2.5lbs. Next scup trip will set sail at
7am tommorrow morning.
Wednesday,
October 24th 5pm
Capt.
Rich reported the local codfishing was again pretty good. A mixture
of smaller market size cod along with a few handfuls of nice green
fish in the teens with the best around 20lbs. Quite a few throwbacks
today as well. Angler hilights included Steve from Enfield,Ct
who had 3 cod inlcuding two in the teens while Mr. Pak had 3 cod
to 12lbs. Joe Horvath from Stamford,Ct had the pool with a cod
in the 20lb range while his buddy Carlo had two nice cod to 15lbs.
A husband and wife team in the bow also had a couple nice cod
to 20lbs but were not entered in the pool. Again some nice cod
were lost by anglers due to the soft bite. The younger cod often
will inhale the fresh clam baits but the bigger fish always seem
to be lip hooked! The other big story today was the jumbo seabass.
Some anglers had as many as 5 to 7 apiece and just about all the
seabass were in the 3 to 6 pound range. Anglers had upwards to
a dozen of the biggest kind of scup apiece with some of the scup
over 3 pounds! Quite a few bluefish with sizes well into the teens
and two fine keeper size blackfish for a very welcome bonus for
two lucky anglers. A couple jumbo fluke were boated and promplty
released by anglers as well today. Just a real nice mixed bag
of bottom dwellers for anglers aboard and this is fall groundfishing
at its finest here in southern Rhode Island waters and the numbers
of the big seabass will likely only get better and better. Next
cod trip sets sail Friday at 7am.
Capt.
Ray reported a repeat of yesterday on the Block Island Porgy trip
today. Full pails of scup and non stop action made for happy customers.
Next scup trip sails tommorrow at 7am.
Tuesday,
October 23rd 7pm
Capt.
Ray reported one of the finest day's of porgy fishing of the fall
season today. Due to the windy forecast and conditions we tried
some protected waters fishing close to Block Island and it turned
out to be a one stop day. Anglers caught porgy after porgy all
day long. There were more throwbacks to weed th |
