Capt. Rich reported a very very strong day of very local cod fishing today. The gorgeous mid December weather allowed us to drift most of the day and the good size green cod were on a rampage eating up anglers fresh clam bait and metal offerings equally well today. One quality fish after another today with most of the fish in the 8 to 12lb range with a handful of larger ones into the mid teens. A scattering of good size sea bass to 5lbs, some big scup, a few red hake and a few good size Christmas Eels and big ocean perch rounded out the awesome catch of cod. The bite started kind of quiet but got stronger and stronger the last couple hours of the day with the last two drifts having rods bent over baccala up and down and all around the entire length of the boat with Capt. Ted and Capt. Rich and Troy running around with gaffs as fast and furious as possible. Some angler hi lights include but are not limited to the following: Jack from Worcester Mass easily limited out on nice green cod to the low teens, all on jigs and teasers filling his cooler right to the top! Bob Litze from Stratford Ct had 8 beautiful green cod into the low teens with just about all of them in the ten pound range, Bob got all his cod on bait. Another angler jigged up 6 nice cod into the mid teens along with a few nice sea bass and a few big scup while Capt. George from Scituate RI fished bait to land 5 nice green cod to the low teens. Todd from Ct switched to jigs during the last two hours of the trip and promptly iced 8 nice green cod to the low teens. Carlo and Gene from Fairfield Cty CT combined for 9 nice cod to the mid teens with Gene taking the pool for the day. Carlo and Gene also had some nice size sea bass, big scup, Christmas Eel to go along with the fine catch of cod using both bait and jigs. Longtime regular Dan Bavir from New Haven Ct had a pair of nice cod in the low to mid teens while another gentleman had four good size cod on bait and regular Dick from Lee Mass had a super 5lb monster sea bass to go along with his cod. Andy from New Britian Ct iced five nice cod to ten pounds plus some good size scup and sea bass and huge ocean perch using bait and so on. These shallow water cod really put up quite the fight and many other nice cod were dropped on both bait and the jigs so it would seem there to be quite a body of fish in development. Just about everyone had cod today and all left with bulging bags of fillets for many fine meals to come. Some pics will appear above today’s report courtesy of Roger. Next scheduled trip for cod sets sail at 7am on the Gail Frances with Capt. Rich on Wednesday.
Capt. Mike reported another big tog crush with a near full boat limit of good size tog to 9lbs and a handsome scattering of nice green cod as well. Just a few days left to get those late season tog with next scheduled trip to set sail tomorrow morning at 6am aboard the Lady Frances with Capt. Mike.
