What a difference a day can make!! While yesterday was certainly a respectable day of local cod fishing today was a very good day and the fish were MUCH MORE spread out around the boat. The action was still rather concentrated more mid ship towards the bow but nice catches were made all around the boat. The boys from Millstone in southern CT put on a cod clinic to remember today with all four of the gentlemen easily limiting out and throwing a lot of fish back to boot! The fellas want to assure their buddy Frank that they were very busy catching COD and not dogs today and they sure have the bags of fresh snow white fillets to prove it! Longtime regular Jose from Pawtucket RI easily limited out today while another longtime regular Lou from Niantic CT was pleased with seven fine market cod, a nice pollock and a couple mackerel to boot! For anyone that has not had the pleasure of dining on fresh caught mackerel, let me tell you first hand it is one of the best tasting fish that swims in the ocean but the key is fresh caught. The rest of the anglers aboard pretty much all had at least a few to several nice fat green market cod apiece to take home. A few nice pollock today again. Best Pollock in the low teens and best cod at least around ten pounds with a nice number of the cod of the larger market variety in the seven to nine pound range. A decent amount of throwbacks as well to keep things moving along. It was a nice steady pick all day long. Bait was the only method that produced today. A few good size ocean perch and a couple of ocean pout but that was about it for the extras. The amount of bait in the area is just staggering and the cod fishing overall seems to be improving steadfastly and seems to be headed towards what we have come to expect for this time of year based on the past several winters. Saturday, Super Bowl Sunday and Monday all look like good fishing days with modest winds and pleasant temperatures so if interested give a call to make a reservation or just come on down as the crowds have been on the lighter side and there has been plenty of room at the rail. Capt. Mike will be ready to set sail tomorrow morning with the Lady Frances set to sail at 5am and the office will be open no later than 4am for check ins and tackle sales.
