Capt. Mike reported a much better day today on the local cod grounds. It is fascinating how they bite one day and not the next or vice versa but fortunately for the enthusiastic turnout of cod enthusiasts aboard today they bit for a couple hours. A steady pick that started spread out and eventually centered itself toward the front of the vessel. That is just how it goes with the gadids on some days. Again, just like Tuesday there were some quality fish with quite a few “gaffers” in the 8 to 10lb range and some a tad bigger with several in the low to mid teens with the pool fish a solid 16lbr. Although the cod were not as spread out as we would have liked some very good catches were made during the brief window in which they turned on. There was at least one limit catch in the bow. Other angler hi lights included longtime regular customer Capt. Frank Rogers from Westport, CT who had 8 nice cod to take home while several other anglers had a good half dozen or so nice cod apiece to take home. Both bait and jigs were effective today with Harry from Canton Ct getting five nice fish on the metal today. Even a few double headers! Fortunately in between and during the cod chew there was a steady pick of ling of varying sizes throughout the day with the biggest a behemoth five pound 26 inch monster ling that is among the biggest this cod enthusiast has ever seen in the flesh! Some anglers had upwards of a dozen ling apiece to take home. A better showing of big ocean perch today along with a few pout rounded out the day’s catch. Some pics today provided courtesy of a local cod fish fanatic. Tomorrow is a new day and Capt. Mike looks forward to setting sail aboard the Lady Frances at 5am. The office will be open by 4am for check ins.
