Roger was pleased to report a very good day of cod fishing with Capt. Rich on the Gail Frances. Almost everyone on the boat left with cod today and most left with two to five nice cod apiece with two anglers icing a half dozen nice cod apiece with Lou from Niantic splitting the hi hook honors with another regular customer. Lou got all his cod on bait while the other fella used both bait and jigs. Bait and jigs were both equally effective today with perhaps more cod bites on the metal just that as is the case with jigging, more fish are always dropped than with bait, it is just the nature of the game. There were two anglers who stuck with jigs all day and they each had four nice cod apiece plus a number of shorts. Those who used jigs GREATLY reduced the number of unmentionables they had to deal with. It was a picture perfect day with flat calm seas and amazing drifting conditions. We fished several areas today finding cod in most and having a few nice long drifts. Despite the jigs working we did not see any bait fish coming out of the cod. The fish were a mix of dark and green fish once again. One stop in some shallower water produced a nice cod, a few shorts and a few handfuls of slammer sea bass to 4lbs plus some scup but unfortunately the unmentionables forced us back into deeper water. Some nice ocean perch and some little pollock, a few slammer gator teen size blue fish, and a few sea ravens rounded out the day’s specie assortment. The pool fish was a fine fat green one in the mid to upper teens was taken by a very pleasant fella from New Jersey. It was a great day of fishing and an awesome day of weather and one to remember for sure. Some pics showcasing angler hi lights will be posted courtesy of Roger. Wednesday’s trip looks doubtful due to the weather on the way which means most likely there will not be a cod trip until this coming Friday at 7am with Capt. Rich ready to sail aboard the Gail Frances.
Capt. Chris reported today’s porgy trip was as good as it gets with the boat limited out and back early. In addition to all the nice size porgies were a nice bunch of keeper sea bass, a pile of blue fish including some real gators into the teens and one fine trigger fish. No scup trip tomorrow due to the weather and Wednesday does not look too likely at this point as well but by later in the week things look to shape up well to continue this great run of scup fishing. Updates will be posted on the web site in the fishing reports section right here so stay tuned.
