Roger another great day on the water today with the local cod fishing with Capt. Rich on the Gail Frances today being best classified as downright respectable. A very good bite to start the day with a lot of nice size green cod coming over the rails. A very nice turnout today of cod enthusiasts to enjoy the incredible late September weather. After a nice pick of mostly good size 8 to 15lb cod for the first few hours we began to see more and more jumbo sea bass and some big porgies mixing in. Some hefty bluefish and a couple red hake and plenty of big ocean perch and very very few unmentionables to compliment the cod ensured a very pleasant angling experience for most of the anglers aboard. One angler in the bow put on one heck of a cod clinic while the bite was one and in relatively short order the gentleman iced at least 7 nice cod including two double headers!! The majority of anglers aboard wound up with a cod or two or three and several nice sea bass and some jumbo porgies to take home on the average and even those who did not catch cod to take home had enough sea bass and porgies for at least a few good meals. A couple fish including one of the day’s biggest took the iron clam today however the vast majority of the cod today were taken with bait simply because most anglers were using bait. The angler who spent a good part of the day jigging also had a few sea bass and porgies take his 8z ava style jig square in the jaw!! The pool fish was a fine green cod in the upper teens taken by longtime regular Mike T from Narragansett. Way to go Mike!! Tomorrow is a new day and the weather looks fine, in fact it looks fine through Monday and Capt. Rich looks forward to setting sail on the Gail Frances at 7am. Just a few pics today courtesy of Roger as he was busy helping the guys skin on the way home today.
First mate Chris K reported the porgy fishing was again “one stop shopping” with Capt. Ray today on the Admiral Frances. The boat was limited out and back to the dock early again. Jumbo scup frequently to 2lbs, some nice sea bass to 3lbs, a few blue fish and two big trigger fish was the take today. The porgy fishing has just been stellar now for almost two weeks and the big porgies range from the near shore waters along the south coast to the local BI grounds and well beyond just to give an indication of how plentiful they are. Rest assured we are BI porgy fishing.
