Roger reported that a small group of anglers decided to brave the elements today in pursuit of some fresh fish for dinner and that the group in general was successful. Hi hook took home 5 nice keepers today. Most walked away with dinner. The wind was a bit more southeasterly than we had anticipated thus the conditions a tad more sporty than we expected so we stuck it out close to home. While it was rainy all day the worst of it held off til after the boat was long tied up to the dock. Capt. Rich explored many areas along the beach close to home finding some fish everywhere but the bite was a bit off due to the oncoming weather. Nevertheless some nice fish were taken and a very respectable number of keepers culled. Bait rigs were the way to go today although there was some success with the buck tails. Whole squid kept some shorts entertained and well feed but did not do much to entice better size fluke to the hook probably due to the presence of newly arrived large numbers of live squid. Longtime regular Ricky from City Island NY took the pool with a fine slab that easily went 7 plus pounds and also had the next biggest fish with a fish around 4.5lbs. A photo of Ricky’s fine brace of jumbos appears courtesy of Roger. As alluded to earlier some big signs of a body of squid moving on to the beaches over the past couple of trips. Capt. Rich reported marking tremendous amounts of bait from just outside the center wall all the way down to west of the Charlestown Breechway !! In fact perhaps too much natural feed was also partly to blame for the slightly less enthusiastic fluke bite today. Hopefully this is the squid push for the weeks to come, albeit better late than never. Let’s just hope this is the real deal and not just a small pop, fingers crossed!! There is no full day and no half day open boat tomorrow. Sunday will be the next sailing day for both the half and full day fluke boats with the Lady Frances set to sail at 8am and 1pm for the half days and the Gail Frances set to sail at 7am for the full day.
