Roger reported a very nice day of porgy fishing today for the handful of anglers who braved a few morning showers, the weather turned out to be just awesome with flat calms seas and brightening skies by late morning. The scup were rather cooperative as well with one angler easily limiting out on nice size scup by Noon!! A couple other anglers aboard wound up limiting out or being very close to it. Pretty much all scup today outside of a few nice sea bass up to 3 lbs. Biggest scup just under 2lbs and plenty over the 1.25 lb mark so in essence really nice stuff! A fine Striped Bass in the low teens topped off one angler’s cooler just fine. The best part of the porgy fishing today was that it was done very close to home ensuring maximum fishing time for the anglers aboard. While all rigs and methods worked for the scup today, a slack line on the bottom was particularly deadly for the bigger stuff. The porgies did not seem as interested in moving baits but still baits filled pails generously! Do not be afraid to use the belly of the clam either as it is one of the best bottom fish baits out there! The belly baits will also often catch the biggest porgies. Some pics today are provided courtesy of Roger. Capt. Ray looks forward to the gorgeous weather tomorrow and more great porgy fishing with the Admiral Frances set to sail at 7am.
Capt. Rich and first mate Chris L reported a much slower day today on the fluke grounds today. There was little to no drift at all today and that likely had everything to do with the slowdown. A mix of fluke and sea bass with the best of both up around four pounds. Mr. Kim took the pool and was hi hook with a total of five keepers and there was another fella who had four keepers and so on. Buck tails worked better today due to the very slow drift. Plenty of skate of assorted size and some shorts kept most anglers quite busy today. Tomorrow will be the next trip out to drift alongside the Block Island Bluffs for late season fluke and the weather looks great with Capt. Rich set to sail on the Gail Frances at 7am. To keep things clear we will be fluking this coming Saturday and Sunday and also Monday and Wednesday of next week.
