Roger reported that the Frances Fleet has officially started the Fall 2013 Cod Season. We got some nice size cod today on the Gail Frances and we were also pleasantly surprised with some big sea bass and platter size scup that were in residence already on the cod grounds. Most of the cod taken were in the 8 to 15 lb range with several bigger fish in the 18 to 22 lb range vying for pool honors. Longtime regular James from NYC took the pool today with a fine green 22 lb cod fish. Most of the fish were green today which is always something we like to see. The action today was all on bait. A good number of the sea bass boated today were in the 2.5 to 4 lb range with longtime regular Norm having the biggest sea bass of the day with a monster that went well over 5lbs! Most of the scup were in the 1.5 to 2 lb range. A few ocean perch, a couple red hake, a few squid (yes squid!!) and one blue fish rounded out the species assortment for the day. We found nice green cod everyplace we stopped today and while it was not red hot it was a fine beginning leaving plenty of room for building. The best approach today for EVERYTHING was one hook down low near the sinker or just above the sinker. Tomorrow is a new day and Capt. Rich will be ready to set sail on the Gail Frances at 7am. Capt. Chris reported a good full day sea bass charter for the Sharon Poquin group from CT. Lots of jumbo sea bass up to at least 4lbs along with some nice scup kept the anglers busy and provided them with lots of tasty white fillets for some fine dining in the near future.
Capt. Ray reported a slower day of porgy fishing today. Some nice size scup and a few good size sea bass but the bite was way off from yesterday for some reason, perhaps related to being on the back side of the moon but no one really knows but the scup. Tomorrow is a new day and Capt. Ray will be at the helm of the Admiral Frances ready to set sail at 7am.
