Roger reported a good day of cod and sea bass fishing aboard the Gail Frances. Biggest cod was in the mid to upper teens and there were a half dozen other cod that were 10 lbs or better on the boat today. Hi hook took home 7 keepers today while two other fishers, both longtime regulars Eugene Barry from Stamford CT and Bob from Niantic CT each boxed six good cod apiece and there were a few others who were in the 5-6 keeper apiece club and those who had 3 or 4 keepers and so on. While not everyone left with cod fish for dinner, the majority of fishers did for sure. A decent number of sea bass limits and those who were not far behind, nothing big on the sea bass but plenty of jumbos and nice size keepers. A few handfuls of good size scup and some big ocean perch and a couple red hake and at least one large sea flounder and just a few of the unmentionables rounded out the catch for the day. There were a lot of short cod fish today and a couple short pollock. We saw porpoises again today, even while anchored up and we have noticed both the cod and sea bass spitting up herring and butter fish however only a couple of cod on jigs as bait was by far the way to go, especially since today we were anchored up all day. Again those “Atlantic” style cod rigs with the two red tubes seemed to do quite well at least earlier in the trip. Cannot hurt to have a few in the tackle box just in case. Sounds like the wind drops right out for tomorrow and the we look forward to a beautiful weather day and hopefully more good fishing as the Gail Frances will set sail at 6 am with Capt. Rich at the helm. A few pictures today courtesy of Roger.
Capt. Mike reported a good day of togging. About a third of the boat was limited out and there were others who only missed by a fish or two. Sizes to 8 lbs, plenty of busy business with shorties and a couple keeper cod and a couple keeper sea bass rounded out the day’s report. Great weather tomorrow and the Lady Frances will set sail with Capt. Mike at the helm at 6 am.
