Roger reported an interesting day of tog fishing. Capt. Mike decided to look at some deeper water rock piles (those so called “white legger zones”) and found a few of them to be infested with beautiful green white bellied lice covered cod fish from 18 inch shorties to “gaffers” with the best of the lot crashing through the ten pound barrier and resting comfortably in the lower teens. To be sure some nice tog up to six pounds were taken and hi hook on the tog took home 5 nice fish, but the cod ran away with the show today. Numerous double headers. One fisher jigged for a half hour or so and managed a few small cod that way too! Hi hook decked 18 nice cod fish (orl) and next up was a two way tie at 15 keepers (orl) and then three other fishers who were responsible for putting 10 or more keepers aboard the Lady Frances (orl after 10 of course). This amount of cod fish in these long touted December tog zones stunned just about everyone including Capt. Mike who thought the level of this experience to be anomalous. Quite a few short tog today as well. Crabs were by far the way to go to get a few keeper tog today. A handful of keeper sea bass, a few good size ocean pout (quickly released unharmed!!), and several Christmas Conger Eels of brag worthy size rounded out today’s catch. We are still on the hunt for late season tatoug and the search starts anew tomorrow with Capt. Mike at the helm of the Lady Frances ready to set sail at 6 am.
Capt. Rich will be ready to set sail on the Gail Frances tomorrow morning at 6 am. Looks like another great day to be looking for cod fish.
