First mate Cory Blount reported an excellent day of cod fishing aboard the Gail Frances today! It was a fast drift but the cod were eagerly chasing both clam baited hooks and jigs today. Over 150 nice cod came to stay aboard the Gail today with the best of the lot in the low teens. Hi hook was a two way tie between two fishers one of whom used a jig and the other bait and they both boxed eight nice keepers apiece, next hi hook took home seven good cod and many other fishers had 3 to 5 cod apiece to take home. A lot of shorties too kept anglers busy. Anglers also had quite the mixed bag of other critters as well with a decent shot of sea bass up to six pounds, some big porgies to 2 lbs, a lot of ocean perch, several large sea flounder, a few nice ling and a few whiting. Weather looks great again for fishing tomorrow and the Gail Frances will set sail at 6am with Capt. Rich at the helm. Pictures today courtesy deckhand Zach E.
Roger reported the last day of togging today. We tried three of our best December spots but found mostly a pick of nice green cod and just a few keeper and short tog on each so by late morning we shifted gears and focused on cod fish around the Island finding a steady pick of nice green fish with a respectable amount of “gaffers”. Longtime regular Mike Kastrati from Flushing NY was hi hook with seven nice cod and he also took the pool with a beautiful green fish of around 15 lbs. The big fish hit a diamond jig and Mike had a few other keepers on jigs bouncing back and forth between bait and jigs. A couple other small cod and sea bass on jigs as well otherwise it was all bait. Longtime regular Mike Kwok boxed six good keepers and longtime regulars Kaylee and her husband from CT teamed up for eight beautiful cod fish to bring home. Other anglers had 2 to 4 keeper cod apiece and then there were some fishers who did not fare as well. Overall we would rate today successful on the cod end of things. A fair amount of short cod, some short tog, a few ocean perch and a few handfuls of good size sea bass rounded out the species assortment for the day. We would like to thank all our tog customers for their support this season and we consider this season to have been a very successful one. A couple pictures courtesy of Roger.
