What a difference a day makes. It appears now that we may not get anything from Hurricane Matthew. But our friends and families in Florida may get a double beating from it. So thinking of them and praying for their safety.
Tonight’s Extended Tuna Trip will be leaving TOMORROW morning instead of tonight. Still a little wind offshore (Nothing to do with Hurricane Matthew), so Captain Mike would like to wait for a morning departure. We would like everyone checked in by 6:00 a.m., so we can leave shortly thereafter. And yes, there will be a price difference. It will be the price of a regular Overnight Tuna Trip.
We have NOT made a decision about the weekend trip yet, so please do not call and inquire. As you can see the weather changes in an instant. What looked impossible a day ago, now looks quite different. We realize everyone is anxious to know the status but we just can’t make a decision prematurely. Thank you for your understanding.
Roger reported it turned out to be a rather extraordinary day on the cod fish boat today. A number of factors lead to choosing that particular adjective with the biggest being a rather epic last drop. Going into the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded and a full count on today’s cod fish trip, the Lady Frances still was suffering from a rather anemic cod fish count. Capt. Matt did one last drop and hit a grand slam Babe Ruth style! Nice green cod fish in the 8 to 15 lb range bent rods up and down and around the Lady Frances and first mate Greg running ragged gaffing one beautiful cod fish after another. Nothing beats a strong finish!! In little more than forty minutes or so many of fishers aboard had boxed several or more good szie cod fish apiece. Some angler high lights as follows: John, Nick and Bob from Milford CT boxing at least two dozen nice size cod fish (20 of them on the last drop alone!!) with the vast majority of their fish in the low teens while longtime regular Big Al from Southington CT quickly amassed 6 cod nice size cod fish all in the 8-12 lb range, longtime regular Bob Boudle from Stafford Springs CT boxing five beautiful cod to just under 15 lbs in short order, Chuck from Ny with six similar size cod and so on. Many of the fishers aboard reported dropping much bigger cod or having the bigger cod fish foul them in the rocks. Big cod fish are very strong in shallow water and stout gear is highly recommended. One angler today managed the biggest pollock that this fisher has seen in about six or seven years with a fish estimated to be just a shade south of the 20 lb mark. That pollock complimented three 8-12 lb cod fish beautifully for the gentleman. Prior to this last stop where the cod fish bit thier heads off, we were having a great day of fishing with some of the best platter size porgy action this fisher has witnessed in a few years. While some young cod and a handful of small keepers were mixed in, the scup were thick as thieves and double headers were the norm with true drop and stick style fishing on several drops. In fact for those who wanted them, angler limits of scup (many in the 2-3 lb range) were easily achieved. It would probably also be best said that we have few worries for when sea bass re opens later this month. For other species of fish we could keep today there were several blue fish including a few alligators into the low/mid teens, some nice size ocean perch and several large to super size sea flounders including a mammoth 21 inch 4 lb specimen taken by longtime regular customer and exceptional rod handler Brian Cofske from Webster MA. Well done Brian! It was a gorgeous although slightly frisky day(perfect anchor weather) aboard the Lady Frances and contrary to common north east wind legend down here, two things did NOT happen. We had few if any of the unmentionables and the fin fish all bit with vigor! Surely the fresh shucked skimmers helped too. A pile of pictures courtesy of Roger. Next cod fish trip sets sail Friday morning at 6 am aboard the Gail Frances.
