Capt. Rich reported the fluke fishing busted open today and that the fish were big!! There was at least one limit catch today and many of the anglers aboard went home with several big fluke apiece today, many of which were jumbos or fish over 4lbs. Joe Stoothoof from Dover,NJ had a day to remember with several keepers including a brace of fluke that went just under 11lbs( 30 inches) and just over 8lbs. Pics of these fine slabs will be featured a bit later on www.noreast.com under our fishing reports thread. Both bucktails and bait rigs were working. Anglers also caught and released some big sea bass to 4lbs and threwback some smaller fluke as well. Capt. Rich looks forward to another good day of fluking tomorrow with the Gail Frances set to sail at 7am. So to recap we had excellent fishing on the beach this morning on the half day charter and excellent fishing further east on the full day trip. Things are finally starting to come together, Fluke fishing through the month of June sails 7am to 4pm daily.
VERY GOOD MORNING HALF DAY FLUKE CHARTER SATURDAY MAY 28TH 2011 ON THE CAPT. FRANCES!!
Capt. George reported some very good fishing close to home along the sandy southern Rhode Island shoreline this morning. The fluke were aggressive and cooperative with the Cody Akin group getting a fine mess of keepers, more than half of which were of the jumbo variety in the 5-6lb range. Plenty of shorts in between to keep things interesting and a few good size sea robins to boot. Rental rod rigs were the way to go this morning. Young fisherman Mike from New Mexico had one of the biggest fluke of the trip with a fine slab over 5lbs. The Capt. Frances still has plenty of openings for charters this upcoming season and is the perfect sailing vessel for groups of 8 to 25 people. If interested call the office and speak to Tammy or Roger for further booking details.
SQUID CRUSH LAST NIGHT FRIDAY NIGHT MAY 27TH ABOARD THE GAIL FRANCES!!
Capt. Ray reported the squid fishing last night was red hot. Anglers filled upwards to a full five gallon pail and a few were starting a second!! Double and even some triple headers!! So to recap Wednesday and Friday Nights were excellent with only Thursday being a bit off. The bite is still on and as of now there is plenty of room for tonight so if interested call the office to book a spot and get in on this great fishing!!
FLUKE FISHING REPORT FOR FRIDAY MAY 27TH 2011
Capt. Rich reported a very slow day of fluke fishing. We covered a lot of territory, marked a lot of bait, had great weather but the fish did not want to chew. A few nice fish and some shorts. Nick from Poughkeepsie NY took today’s pool with a fine 8lb slab. Tomorrow is a new day and we will try a new set of areas with Capt. Rich setting sail at 7am on the Gail Frances.
SQUID FISHING REPORT FOR THURSDAY NIGHT MAY 26TH 2011
Capt. Ray reported a slower night of squid fishing last night. A few anglers did well but most found the squid to be very tough to trick into taking artificial baits. In fact while the squid were all over the place and the water column and frequently near the surface, especially late at night, the squid were not as aggressivley feeding on the live bait in the water as they were the night before. We had the bait on the surface to the point of turning the water a pinkish hue again but for whatever reason the squid were off their feed. Most anglers did get at least a handful of squid and the top producers filled upwards of a half a five gallon pail. Light fresh water rods and casting the jigs out away from the boat and letting them settle with the lightest weight possible seemed to have some edge last night. Tonight is a new night and no two nights are the same and we look forward to a new trip on the Lady Frances at 7pm with Capt. Ray. For those interested in the finfish side of things. The catch and release sea bass and short fluke action was also not quite as good as the night before but anglers did catch and release some of each. Two nice size black fish last night was a pleasant addition and as usual there were a few skates and hefty sea robins. Late in the trip there was one keeper fluke taken as well.
AFTERNOON UPDATE FOR THURSDAY MAY 26TH 2011
Unfortunately the full day fluke boat did not make it out today but Capt. Mike and Roger had a very busy day right outside the gap today and that activity included about a dozen nice recreational fish most of which were in the 3 to 5lb range. At times the action was really hot and heavy and Roger had six double headers for the day!! Small bucktails and the tandem bait rig with just squid and spearing worked the best today. There was a tremendous amount of spearing and sand eels on the grounds today and the fluke were chock full of them. The fluke were also spitting up whole squid so there is a lot of activity developing along the south shore beaches right now. Capt. Rich looks forward to a pleasant day on the water setting sail for fluke at 7am aboard the Lady Frances.
GOOD SQUID FISHING LAST NIGHT WEDNESDAY MAY 25TH ABOARD THE LADY FRANCES!
Capt. Ray reported a good night of squid fishing last night and some awesome weather. It was the first warmer night of the season and the ocean was just loaded with activity! The squid were all over the water column and frequently chasing the massive clouds of spearing and sand eels turning the water a pinkish hue on the surface! The squid were mostly larger and jumbo super size tubes with many tubes between seventeen and twenty inches, tentacles excluded, measured!! The catch varied from angler to angler but two guys fishing up in the bow each managed a full five gallon pail of the tasty mollusks. The squid were a bit tricky at times to catch due to all the natural bait so casting away from the bait with light sinkers on fresh water spinning rods and letting the jigs settle as slow and natural as possible seemed to be the ticket to sucess for many anglers. Some anglers had good results sight fishing for the squid later in the evening. On most nights the stiffer rods just do not seem to cut it. Everyone wound up with a good amount of squid and had a great time out on the water. A lot of short fluke and sea bass of mixed sizes grabbed the squid jigs as well last night, all promptly relased. A few anglers trying for fluke with fresh chunks of squid were rewarded with a couple nice keepers and plenty of small fluke to throwback. They were also able to catch and release a pile of big sea bass up to over 4lbs and one angler also got to put a three pound winter flounder back in the water after it tried to gobble up a fresh slice of squid! It is not fun but rules are rules and no seabass can be kept before July 11th this year. No scup can be kept before June 8th on the boat as well and they are sometimes frequent on these night trips. The first cocktail blue fish of the season and a fine 6lb tog plus a few hefty sea robins rounded out the finfish extravaganza that complimented the very good squid fishing. Capt. Ray looks forward to another fun night of productive squid fishing with the Lady Frances set to sail at 7pm.
MUCH BETTER FLUKING TODAY WEDNESDAY MAY 25TH 2011
Capt. Rich reported a much better day with the fluke today. Hi hook had five fine keepers and the majority of anglers aboard went home with dinner anyways. Biggest fish of the day around 8lbs. Tomorrow we try again with the Lady Frances set to sail at 7am with Capt. Rich.
Tuesday May 24th
Capt. Richie reported only a small number of anglers on the boat and about the same number of keeper fluke. He started out to the East and had one nice drift and put 5 keepers in the boat right away but fishing stalled shortly thereafter. A few more for the day and a number of throwbacks. One angler did manage 4 keepers for himself. The next trip is tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m.
Tuesday May 24th
The Gail Frances is out Fluke Fishing today and we will have a full report later. We are planning to sail tomorrow, Wednesday May 25th. Please call the office to make reservations, which includes name, phone, number and credit card. If for some reason you can’t make the trip after you put your reservation in, PLEASE notify us. It is unfortunate for everyone if the boat does not get out. The weather seems like it is finally going to break and the boat will hopefully be sailing on a more regular basis. The fishing will keep improving with the warm temperatures that are coming in. Through Friday, the boat will be sailing from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. but starting on Saturday May 28th the trip will be extended to 4:00 p.m. and may be heading East to some deeper water. But keep in mind, where the boat fishes is entirely up to the captain and conditions.
