Due to the weather there will be no fluke boat tomorrow, Tuesday May 17th. Give the office a call on Tuesday to check on Wednesday’s conditions.
NO SQUID FISHING TONIGHT SUNDAY MAY 15TH 2011/ COD FISH REPORT FOR TODAY
Due to a lack of reservations the squid trip for tonight has been cancelled. Reservations for squid trips should be made by 3pm. Too bad as the wind is light southerly tonight and the squid fishing was really starting to come around last night and Capt. Mike marked a lot of bait on the fluke grounds today. Well next squid trip will be set for Wednesday night on the Lady Frances setting sail at 7pm.
Capt. Rich reported a slow day of local cod fishing today. A handful of market cod and a handful of shorts, one big pout and one nice ocean perch but otherwise things were very grey all around. Southeast wind and the moon to blame? Maybe. Weather looks a bit unkind for the cod until late in the week so next trip is likely to be on Friday so call the office if interested to make a reservation.
FLUKE REPORT FOR SUNDAY MAY 15TH 2011
Capt. Mike reported an okay day of fluke fishing today. A few anglers did well but the fluke were not easy to catch. Too much natural bait and still chilly water temps are making the fluke sketchy of angler baits. Hi hook did go home with four fine keepers to 4lbs plus today and another angler culled two nice fish out of a heap of shorts. One angler was using a white bucktail and the other was using fresh native squid strips and spearing on a tandem bait rig and fishing it very hard. Fish were caught over a wide area of ground and it is still only mid May. It turned out to be a nice day on the water with partial sunshine most of the day, light wind and just a few sprinkles so the light crowd on the boat enjoyed a beautiful day on the water and the majority went home with enough fresh fluke for dinner anyway.
IMPROVED SQUID FISHING SATURDAY NIGHT MAY 14TH 2011 ON THE LADY FRANCES
Capt. Ray reported the squid fishing continued to show improvement last night. A few anglers had managed upwards to a half of a five gallon pail. The bite was the best early on with the bite dying the last hour or so of the trip. Numbers did vary quite a bit from angler to angler but things were much better than the past few nights and actually pretty close to what we would normally expect for the middle of May. We are pleased with the improvent and the next scheduled squid trip sets sail this evening at 7pm on the Lady Frances so please call the office to make a reservation for tonight’s trip and make sure to bring your rain gear!
COD FISHING REPORT FOR SUNDAY MAY 14TH 2011
Capt. Rich reported a respectable catch of cod today although there was nothing big they were all beautiful market size fish as fat as footballs! They are gorging themselves on mackerel of various sizes and today a few good size mackerel were caught on the jigs and teasers. A few cod were taken on bait but the vast majority were on the jigs/teasers. Ken and Matt from JB Niantic had several nice market cod apiece to take home while Don from Rocky Hill Ct also took home several nice fat green cod. Some ocean perch today too in the mix. Next cod trip is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 6am aboard the Gail Frances with Capt. Rich.
FLUKE REPORT FOR SATURDAY MAY 14TH 2011
Capt. Mike reported a slower day with the fluke today. A respectable number of keepers for mid May but a let down from yesterday nonetheless. Quite a few shorts to keep anglers busy between the keepers and one lucky angler caught a good size squid today. No big doormats either today with the best fluke just under 4lbs. We have to remind ourselves however that it is still only mid May and in years past today’s action would be considered quite good. Tomorrow is a new day and we look forward to getting back out there as the Lady Frances will be set to sail at 7am.
SQUID FISHING LAST NIGHT FRIDAY MAY 13TH 2011
Capt. Ray reported that overall the squid fishing was better than the past two nights. By the end of the night there was a steadier pick going on. Pretty much all good size tubes, many well over a foot in length. The big difference last night was the tremendous amount of sandeels spearing and squid which came up to the surface at the end of the night, all of which had been absent Wed and Thurs nights but present during the squid slaughter of last weekend. Fishing should continue improving tonight. Still a good number of spots left so if interested in going please call the office today to make a reservation.
SOLID DAY OF COD FISHING TODAY, FRIDAY MAY 13TH ABOARD THE GAIL FRANCES
Capt. Rich was pleased to report a solid day of local cod fishing aboard the Gail Frances today with cod taken every stop they tried. Hi hook went home with six nice fish today. Nothing huge but all nice market size fish with the best in the mid teens. Some shorts and one big pout otherwise mostly cod fish today. Jigs and tubes far outproduced bait once again today so make sure to bring metal cod catchers or purchase them here in the store before you go! Capt. Rich looks forward to another nice day of local cod fishing tomorrow with the Gail Frances set to sail at 6am.
EXCELLENT FLUKING TODAY MAY 13TH 2011 ON THE LADY FRANCES!!
Capt. Mike was jubilant to report the huge increase in the amount of bigger fish today while drifting along Rhode Island’s scenic south shore beaches. We had two legit doormats with Art Blumer of Southington Ct putting a fine 8lb slab to rest on the deck of the Lady Frances and Dan King doing the exact same thing with a fine 8lb slab. There were several other jumbo fluke in the 4-5lb range and an excellent number of keepers for the middle of May. Most anglers went home with a keeper or even two and a few anglers took home three nice fluke apiece. Combined with plenty of shorts and fish caught every stop and the gorgeous weather there was nothing more we could ask for the middle of May. All terminal gear seemed to be working well although the tandem bait rig with just squid and spearing was tough to beat for staying busy and taking dinner home. Capt. Mike looks forward to another good day tomorrow with the Lady Frances set to sail at 7am for fluke. A few pics of today’s angler hilights can be seen at www.noreast.com under our fishing reports thread.
UPDATE FOR FRIDAY MORNING MAY 13TH 2011
After a rock star start to the squid fishing all three nights last weekend, the squid fishing seems to have become quite a bit more relaxed the past couple nights. They are around and are being marked but have been staying down near the bottom in the hard tides of the past few days. Five days of hard north to northeast winds has also not helped any by lower the water temp a couple degrees as well. With the milder weather coming back today and over the weekend we look for a marked improvement in the local squid fishing and consider the past two nights a very temporary set back. Anglers did get some squid each night and most were of the large and jumbo variety but after the incredible out of the box start the action was a bit of a let down to say the least. We are squid fishing the next three nights by reservations. We will also be out on the cod and fluke grounds today so look for lots of updates later this afternoon here at the Frances Fleet and reports are also posted on a running thread on www.noreast.com under party/charter boat fishing reports. The weather looks great this weekend and we will be sailing 6am for cod and 7am for fluke and as stated earlier 7pm for squid. Call the office to make a reservation for any of these outings and come on down and enjoy the beautiful spring weather!
