Roger reported a good day of cod fishing today aboard the Gail Frances. The majority of the cod brought over the rail required gaffs (8-15lbs) with a nice bunch of bigger fish into the low 20’s. Generally nice green fish. Longtime regular fisher Mike from Flushing was hi hook with 8 nice keepers to 20 lbs. Longtime fisher Sean from Bridgeport boxed four teen size cod and a bunch of other fishers had 3 to 5 nice cod apiece to take home. A lot of the bigger cod fish were taken on a higher hook today and some fishers did quite well using the Atlantic style cod rigs. There were some fishers who did not do as well with the cod but overall we were very pleased with the size and numbers on this outing. To compliment the cod there were a lot of ling including some big 3-4 lbrs. There was also a good amount of good size sea bass to 4 lbs with some fishers getting their limit or very close. Nice size scup to well over 2 lbs with some fishers who used smaller baits and hooks getting upwards to 15-20 nice scup apiece. One fisher for example who used small baits had three teen size cod, 20 big scup, an easy limit of sea bass to 4 lbs, a big sea flounder and a pile of big ocean perch. We had a lot of big ocean perch today with many fishers keeping them as they really do make outstanding table fare. We had one nice size keeper pollock and a few large sea flounder. Best of all the unmentionables were few and far between and we did not catch a lot of short cod fish. Gorgeous anchor weather all day and being that was the case most of the fishers aboard stuck with the fresh shucked skimmers. The report from Capt. Mike from the recent tuna trip was of fishing on the slower side. A handful of albacore in the 30-35 lb range, one 70 lb yellow fin and a sword just under 100 lbs caught by long time regular customer and exceptional rod handler David Roberto. Next tuna trip sets sail this coming Wednesday Night at 10 pm. Still some spaces available. One picture of the sword provided courtesy of David whom we thank for the photo.
