First mate Cote reported an outstanding evening of fishing last night aboard the Lady Frances!! The best showing of Striped Bass of the season for a very light crowd of anglers with fish up to 43 lbs!! Also fares generally had as many blue fish as they wanted including a few ten fish limits! Sizes on the choppers manageable being under ten pounds. Diamond jigs were hot in the evening and then later on they switched over to live eels. Pictures hopefully incoming. Best of all the fishing was close to home giving anglers more soak time. The bass and blues were all chock full of baby butter fish. Plenty of room tonight’s outing so if interested please call the office to make a reservation. Capt. Ray will be ready to set sail on the Lady Frances at 7 pm.
First mate Cory just sent in a couple pictures of what may very well be the biggest fluke so far of the 2014 season. The 31 inch beauty fell victim to a buck tail for one of our longtime regular customers. This is really a beautiful fish! Cory said the big fluke is easily over 12 lbs! What a difference a week makes! Last week we were kind of down in the doldrums but this past week has featured nearly 200 fluke over 4 lbs and at least 20 fish between 8 to just over ten pounds!! Needless to say the Block Island fluke bite is on!! The 7am to 4pm full day fluke/sea bass boat sails daily.
Christine Blount reported a decent morning of half day fishing with a nice mess of good size sea bass hitting the decks of the Lady Frances and plenty of smaller ones keeping rods bent and spirits high. A handful of nice fluke as well. A sea bass well over 4 lbs took the pool. A few pictures from the half day outing this morning will join the big fluke at the top of today’s update courtesy Mrs. Blount.
Over on the Admiral Frances, Capt. Matt reported the Nelson D’acosta group had a great morning of sea bass fishing close to home with lots of nice sea bass including a few real brutes up to and over 4 lbs. Some nice size scup mixed in as well. Plenty of smaller sea bass and porgies kept rods bent and anglers busy at the rail.
The report from first mate Cory is of another day punctuated by big fluke aboard the Gail Frances. A nice turnout of anglers enjoyed a nicely spread out catch of mostly big fluke and quite a few nice size sea bass. Biggest fish so far this season, the speed bump thick 31 inch slab weighed in at just a shade under 12 lbs at the end of the day after being bled and sitting in a cooler so likely to be much closer to 13 lbs right out of the water. The big flounder was taken on a white buck tail with a round head that seems to be available only in the nyc metro area and the jig was tipped with a strip of fluke belly and two spearing. The angler who caught the big fluke dropped the fish twice but the third time the doormat INHALED the jig so deep that she was gutted. That same angler also boxed fluke of 8 and 7 lbs today! All in all about 60 of the 150 good size keepers taken today were 4 lbs or better in size! Quite a few anglers with several nice fluke apiece in their bags and coolers with hi hook boxing 6 good summer flounders. There were some sea bass limits today and sizes on the sea bass up to 4 lbs. A handful of nice scup and only one blue fish today. Great fishing weather again tomorrow with the Gail Frances set to sail at 7 am.
The report from the Whale Watch boat was of yet another ROCK STAR outing with lots of Fin Backs and big pods of dolphins playfully frolicking about in the waters south of Block Island.
