FIRST DAY OF FALL COD 2011 REPORT FOR SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH/VERY GOOD PORGY FISHING TODAY ON THE ADMIRAL FRANCES!!
Capt. Rich reported that they enjoyed a gorgeous first weather day of the Fall Cod 2011 season and the fishing wound up pretty good as well. Cod were caught at every stop but the pickings nothing more than encouraging until late in the day when the cod began to bend the rods up and down the sides of the Gail Frances. Late in the day there was a nice steady pick of BIG GREEN FISH with at least a half dozen fish in the 20lb range and a few bigger ones up to 25lbs. In fact Wally Frey had a fine brace of cod over 20lbs with the pool winning 25lbr and had a total of four nice cod for the day. Longtime regular Willie from the Bronx was hi hook with a total of 8 keeper cod up to 12lbs while Lou from Niantic had six keeper cod including a 20lbr and a couple other hefty cod well into the teens. Mr. Pak was also a force to reckon with today as he put 5 nice cod into his cooler including two fish in the 20lb range. Fluke sharpie Mike T from Narragansett laid a fine 20lbr to rest on the deck while longtime regular Norman had four nice keepers today and so on. All in all a pretty good first day. Other than the bigger cod there was a nice scattering of market size cod caught before the late bite and anglers also had some sea bass and a few hubcap size scup and some nice ocean perch as well. The bite was very very soft today and A LOT of big cod were missed or dropped, some even half way or more up. For those waiting for the big cod to bite really hard you may have a long wait and also if you think these big green cod cannot strip a bait off the hook think again! Almost all the cod over ten pounds today were just hooked in the corner of the mouth. Some pics will be posted above this report today to showcase a few angler hi lights. Capt. Rich was very encouraged by the results of the first day and looks forward to more good fishing tomorrow with the Gail Frances set to sail at 7am.
First mate Cory reported very good Porgy fishing today on the Admiral Frances. Experience made the difference and the guys who were really dialed in had no problem getting their limits of platter size scup and YES the big scup were BACK! The 1.5 to 2lb fish were quite common once again and there were bigger fish up to and just over 3lbs! A nice showing of big sea bass to 4lbs mixed in as well with hi hooks on the sea bass getting upwards to a half dozen keepers apiece to take home. A handful of handsome blue fish up to 12lbs added some excitement to the great day of porgy fishing. Capt. Chris looks forward to another good day of Porgy fishing tomorrow with the Captain Frances set to sail at 8am.
PORGY REPORT FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH 2011/ COD STARTS TOMORROW AT 7AM ON THE GAIL FRANCES!!!!
Capt. Ray reported a slower day of porgy fishing. The porgies were there but finicky and tough to keep interested in eating. We think an abundance of blue fish may have been at least partly to blame. Nevertheless some big scup up to over 2lbs and a scattering of nice size sea bass made their way into the bags and coolers. Hi hooks probably had around 30 big scup apiece to take home. Tomorrow is a new day and today was very likely just a momentary hiccup, Capt. Ray looks forward to setting sail on the Admiral Frances for scup at 8am.
Capt. Rich will be kicking off the Fall Cod Season 2011 tomorrow morning on the Gail Frances. In the past five seasons the Fall Cod fishing has been quite good with a lot of quality fish each season. We hope for more of the same this Fall. Fall Cod trips will run on a Monday,Wednesday,Friday and Weekend sailing schedule at 7am. Weather looks just fine this weekend and a fresh Cod report will be posted by late afternoon or early evening tomorrow. The Frances Fleet will be out on the cod grounds with fresh skimmer clams!
EXCELLENT FISHING ON BOTH THE 7AM AND 8AM FULL DAY BI BOTTOM FISHING BOATS TODAY, THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH 2011!!
Capt. Chris reported a very good albeit late bite on the porgies today. But once they turned on it was gangbusters with double headers of big scup coming up all around the boat. One angler easily managed to limit out and in the short but late bite the rest all wound up with fifteen to thirty big scup apiece. Most anglers also had four to six big sea bass apiece with quite a few of them in the two to three and a half pound range. One small bluefish and a couple ocean perch to top off a great catch of scup and sea bass. Biggest scup today around 2lbs. Capt. Ray looks forward to less humid weather and more good fishing tomorrow with the Admiral Frances set to sail at 8am.
Capt. Rich reported a great day of fishing on the 7am full day boat today with some really outstanding late season fluke fishing once again! Adam and his wife from Berlin CT teamed up for 8 jumbo fluke up to 8lbs (nothing under 4lbs!!) and they also had 8 big sea bass up to 4lbs and a few slammer scup to boot. Capt. Rich came down and worked a rod for a little while and in short order put two jumbo fluke in the boat with the biggest one going 7lbs. Chris L managed to go four keeper fluke out of tweleve total in between helping the customers with one or two of his fluke being jumbos. You get the picture, fluke fishing still holding strong around BI. This is hard bottom fluking though folks so be prepared to loose some gear and also be prepared at times for quick drift condtions. In addition to all the nice fluke that were taken anglers had plenty of good size sea bass to over 4lbs with a few anglers amassing limit catches on the tasty relatives of the southern grouper and there were also quite a few platter size porgies and a few nice blue fish to top things off. Everyone went home with nice bags of fillets for many fine meals to come. As mentioned earlier on the site Capt. Frank is adding special full day BI fluke trips by reservation only on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting September 20th leaving at 7am and returning at 4pm. We will continue to target fluke on these days as long as the fishing and weather holds. Call the office to book a reservation or to have any questions answered about these Tuesday and Thursday late season Fluke expeditions.
SPECIAL TUESDAY AND THURSDAY FLUKE TRIPS BY RESERVATION ONLY STARTING SEPTEMBER 20TH 2011!!!
Due to the remarkably good fluke fishing that Capt. Rich has experienced over the last five trips we will offer a full day FLUKE trip by reservation only on Tuesdays and Thursdays over the next few weeks. The trip will run 7am to 4pm and the first scheduled trip will sail this coming Tuesday, September 20th. These Fluke trips will likely be fishing some pretty deep water so be sure to have some heavier sinkers and or bucktails should drift condtions dictate the use of them.
LONG RANGE TUNA CRUSH ON THE LADY FRANCES!!!, OFFSHORE REPORT WEDNESDAY 9/14/11
Word from the Tuna crew was of an excellent trip once again! Anglers had a really wild first night crushing the Yellowfin with some nice Albacore mixed in and a good pick on the second night making for a great trip. Tuna were caught using all terminal gear (chunk, troll and jigging). Limits of Yellowfin were taken using both jigs and on the chunk with some anglers hooking upwards of a dozen Tuna apiece!! The biggest Wahoo ever seen by the crew was taken. Capt. Mike estimated it between 60 – 80 lbs. Now that is some Wahoo! A couple dozen or so nice Mahi with one big bull in the high teens topped off a great catch of Yellowfin Tuna that generally ranged from 30 to 70lbs. This coming Weekend’s trip is SOLD OUT, however there is still PLENTY of room available on the Tuna trip that sets sail Sunday Night the 18th and returns during the afternoon on the 21st.
Just a reminder that the Frances Fleet DISCOURAGES the bringing/or use of LIQUOR on any of the fishing trips. Anglers may bring a modest amount of canned beer on all trips EXCEPT for Night Striper trips in which case not even canned beer is permitted.
7 AND 8AM FULL DAY REPORTS FOR 9/14/11, 7AM REPORT FOR 9/13,ETC.
Capt. Rich reported a good day of fishing today on the 7am full day boat. A lot of nice fluke taken with at least a half dozen fish over 5lbs and the best up to 7lbs. Hi hook took home five nice fluke! Awesome for a mid September day! Anglers also had plenty of good size sea bass with some anglers getting upwards to 8 to 10 good size sea bass apiece. A few handfuls of good size scup to top things off. On Yesterday’s 7am full day boat there was also an impressive number of fluke to 5lbs and a nice mess of good size sea bass up to 4lbs and a big mess of super size scup to nearly 3lbs. Capt. Rich plans to set sail tomorrow morning at 7am on the Gail Frances for mixed bag bottom fishing hoping for more good albeit very late season fluking!
Capt. Ray reported a good day of porgy fishing today. The best bite was first thing this morning but anglers picked throughout the day. Not quite the size we had been used to the past few days but still very good fishing with at least a few limit catches and some super size platters up to and over 2lbs. Some hefty sea bass and a couple triggerfish to add some variety along with one or two blue fish to provide a bit of extra sport. The Admiral Frances will be set to sail tomorrow morning with Capt. Chris at 8am for scup.
On yesterday’s scup trip there were a few more details that I thought were worth posting. On the 13th it was a two drift day and there were also a lot of good size triggerfish mixed in, even a double header of triggers! There were also plenty of big sea bass to nearly 5lbs and a few blue fish to keep things interesting as well.
MORNING UPDATE WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH 2011
The word relayed from Capt. Ray to the office yesterday told of just insane scup fishing with most anglers limited out and some just quitting early or being very very size selective with the scup they choose to keep. The fishing yesterday was just off the charts and the sizes were similar to the previous days. Double headers were common place. Some nice sea bass as usual in the mix as well. Porgy season is short but the fishing is as hot as last year so one has to strike while the iron is hot as they say! Porgy fishing sails daily at 8am weather permitting through October 11th.
There was no word from the 7am boat yesterday but reasonable logic would dictate that the fishing was likely quite good. Full details on Tuesday’s full day 7am boat will be posted once they are available. Remember folks that this weekend marks the beginning of FALL COD 2011, starting Saturday, September 17th the Gail Frances will switch to its cod schedule sailing on a MONDAY,WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY AND WEEKEND schedule at 7am weather permitting.
Also look for a fresh offshore Tuna report a bit later this afternoon. Hopes are high after the excellent results achieved on the previous trip. Still plenty of room on some prime dates so check out the full sailing schedule on our web site and call the office for further booking details.
Fall is considered by many to be the best time of year here at the Frances Fleet with a variety and quantity of game and ground fish available unlike at any other time during the calendar year.
